What he meant is US strategic defeat, not necessarily military defeat.
War has many angle and dimension beyond battlefield, and as you can already see this war is extremely unpopular in the US itself, and across the world. Majority Americans doesn't support this war before it even started and some of them are now even supporting Iran, indirectly, to defend itself (not necessarily defeat US, but defend itself).
So if the war drags on for too long and the economy started to bleed, people's pocket started to burn, and American soldiers dead bodies started coming in regularly, the war will get even more unpopular and people will pressure the US government to the brink. On top of that US image as the world invincible superpower will be questioned. That's what the defeat will look like for USA.

These are intended to make people to loose confidence. China would certainly do it to make USA loose their confidence. USA is afterall fighting for Iranian rights. Righteousness will always win. USA will win.
He is talking abt long term success. These are his guessing. Why India too won freedom fighting against British. Have we won in long-term? We have lost to our own politicians. So do we call our freedom fighting a victory or failure?
