Why The American EV Dream Is Falling Apart

Automakers, battery makers and suppliers have been directing billions of dollars to factories and other facilities across the United States - mostly in Republican areas, especially in the South. But EV sales forecasts are dropping, and federal support has dried up. Automakers are pivoting away from EVs and toward hybrid and gas vehicles. They are writing down EV investments, pivoting to hybrid and gas and, in many cases, laying off workers. CNBC visited two southern industry towns to see what the future holds.

It's not the enthusiasm that cooled down, it's the average household income that froze to death
@INVAZOR33
American auto makes failed because they don't want to make utilitarian vehicles and insist in doing status symbols. Not even a wall of tariffs could compensate for their mediocrity.
@tonyson8721
All of these plants still not producing cars that people can afford. The average car is now $50K.
@gastonpierre1705
If Americans don't want to buy electric cars why is the US government putting a 100% tariff on them. Why????? Why is it all the time you try to buy one that is a lil affordable the dealer tells you it not a good idea....
@sergiomessina2037
Why is the rest of the world adoption of EV’s increasing except here in the United States? Seems like all the reasons you’ve mentioned skirted the real issues here. The low demand is because of politics, and poor, expensive options to purchase. Let’s see the adoption of EV‘s once Chinese EV‘s are allowed in the United States. Anybody remember the 1970s with Japanese cars?
@kevinlin4895
Because the US is the only country that has an ideological issue with Chinese EVs. The rest of the world, at worst only has an economic issue with them, and economic issues can be negotiated. The US can not abide by Chinese success at any level, so they rather ban outright, even if it means screwing over themselves by buying inferior products that are more expensive.
@brucel7430
Even if the US let cheap Chinese EV's in, the US still lack the infrastructure, not only the charging stations, but also the power generations. Now peopel are complaining the price of electricity with the AI compaines buying up the power, imagine what will it look like when swtich to EVs. The US , both federal and local government, don't do long term planning well, lack of investement for infrastrcuture for the furtue is a big obstacle.
@VibnWavez
I don't think there's any problem with them (besides cost but that's everything) ... it's the infrastructure. Nobody wants to fight for a spot to charge, wait half an hour, and also contend with the pretty high odds you might run low and end up somewhere that has no chargers. Cart before the horse type shii
@tyrannosaurusinf1488
Car makers expected to charge a premium for EVs and everyone has less money to spend. Result: not enough sales. If you let Chinese EVs compete in this market, then you'd see the actual interest in them.
@darrylcurley6200
This is what happens with automakers do not listen to the consumer what they prefer the most then follow the hype they over stock what the consumers did not want that much of because they still prefer combustion engines and hybrid of choice
@garyclack3807
EVs aren’t going away.If US auto makers don’t want to build them then bring on the Chinese
@losmoney82
The infrastructure that's necessary is a pipe dream at this point. The U.S. can't even take care of our current roads and bridges that need an overhaul.
@Sect10n31
The majority of Americans today live in apartment buildings within cities. Where the hell are you going to recharge your EV??
Most buildings want no part in the thermal runaway fire risks associated with recharging EVs in garages & on premise. Throw in the greater insurance costs & expensive regulatory building code requirements that prevents an EV fire from burning down the place & you'll come to the same conclusion... Where the hell are you going to recharge your EV?!!?
@Buzzmonkey24
Walmart just announced they are building charging stations on their properties , also subsides are going away soon, while EV agreed to a standard starting this year 2026 with the charging cable , So i think something else is brewing . I mean even ELON did not like EV Subsides so , we will see what happens sooner then later , EV companies need to build SUVS for families and pick up trucks that cost less then Gas and not of the level of some mortgages . example Fords First 90,000 dollar F150 lightening ridiculous
@TheLobo91
Markets go up and down. Pure EV just outsold pure gas cars in Europe. It doesn't matter what the US does the rest of the world will move forward without the USA. Trump is really good at bankrupting everything around him.
@passby8070
The world have reached 25% adoption rates without much contributions from North America last year, up from less than 5% 5 years ago.
@hellburner5093
Mostly new car made are computers in itself. In case of EV that's a forking workstation. People want cars to commute from point A to Point B. Not a 65 inch screen to look at it while driving.
@BrentMoll
Yes, the best way to recover is to review what is selling and manufacture more of those vehicles. Disconinue the ones which are not. Meet demand, not try to cram krap down people's throats that they do not want at unaffordable prices.
@prebaned
Never trust a auto manufacturer future claims. GM and Ford both stated full in the EV push, then started pulling the plug. They react to sales as thier production development investments. Maybe they should listen to thier customers and potential customers. Making a EV truck thats 30% more expensive than its ICE counterpart, less range, less towing capacity isnt what any consumer asked for.
@chriscross1737
Can't believe the US is regressing. Once the front runner for innovation, now lags behind China.
If the US does not accept innovation and continue to be selfish, they will lose allies and status pretty fast.
@lynngraycom
It doesn’t really have to do with EVs, it’s because automakers got greedy and designed to focus on premium products at low volume vs cars for the everyman. Putting this on consumers is missing the mark. EVs should be simple and cheap, not exotic luxury items.
@cuddlepoo11
Wait until the US auto industry pushed out of all markets except US and then the Chinese and other EV’s arrive in the US. Goodbye US auto maker jobs.
@doujinflip
All this attention on EV cars, but we hear little of making more chargers and improvements to the electrical infrastructure behind it.
@bobbyfaison
The demand & acceptance are not the issue for the US market. It's the government creating directly opposing policy to deter EV market growth and promote fossil fuels. Every other country that has embraced EVs has seen the growth of EVs outpace ICE.
@DennisFahlstrom
EV and home solar are falling apart because big oil has bought out our politicians. If you doubt that, take a look at some places where it is growing and flourishing even though they haven’t got the best weather for it — like Northern Europe, China, Korea and Scandinavia. Another reason the US market has tanked is that US vehicle makers got greedy jacking up EV prices beyond the means of a majority of their own market.
@cgraham6
Proof that it was government mandates driving the entire EV industry. Government endlessly increasing CAFE standards and telling automakers that more and more of their fleet had to be EVs BY LAW forced them to invest billions into EV production. When Trump helped to strike down the state mandates and subsidies, true market demand was free to work.
@Darhan62
Range anxiety and lack of charging stations... Fix those two issues and consumer sentiment will change.
@acevedolc
You may mention this, but insurance is more expensive for EVs. What you save in gas you pay in insurance. I'm also suspecious of the pricing strategy. The tax incentives may have been use for price increases.
@kevinkent6351
Only Tesla made a meaningful investment into charging infrastructure. The other players gave up and are mostly using Tesla chargers. The very poor charging infrastructure is a huge contributor to low demand.
@keshmild
Without owning a house you cannot charge at home. This is a huge blocker when buying an EV. Plus, dealers never push EVs as it isn't as profitable to them because of a low maintenance.
@longbeach225
EV too high because of tariffs blocking competition and a President who wants to send the country back instead foward. You can buy a small Chinese EV for $ 5000.
@legostud
It isn’t that consumers don’t want EVs, it’s more that in some areas the infrastructure isn’t there to charge them. The other factor is the cost to purchase them.
@FastlifeTodd
My question is as of December 2025 renters make up 44 million people in the United States. Not to mention condos apartments etc who would pay for the EV chargers to be installed and what would that look like in the future.
@choicesii1
Problem with EVs is not the EV, but more so electric costs outpacing gas. Not due to consumers, but companies using more electricity and people are all using the same grid. Also it doesn't help when you see an EV for 40k+, then in China it goes for 10k and looks better.
@jorgecintron9674
The government/OEM’s have forced us to buy Gas vehicles for over a century. We finally have a better option but most people have been institutionalized for decades so they don’t know any better. The incentives given to EV’s thus far is a literal drop in the bucket to what the oil industry has had for over 100 years.
@Sect10n31
Only TOYOTA got it right with their gas-electric HYBRIDS across their ENTIRE product line, because one does not simply run BEFORE they learn to walk first.
Tesla is actually an AI/software company that needed to manufacture & sell MILLIONS of EVs to gather the data crucial to training their AI software. It didn't hurt that profits from selling EVs also helped Tesla to finance FSD & other AI endeavors.
@jarednovel
This only gives China a rare opportunity to completely dominate the global EVs sales for so many years to come. How come China was able to sell more EVs globally than Internal combustion engine cars in 2025
@Mlu007M
Listening to customers is not always the right move. EVs are the future. They just need to be efficient in manufacturing them and lower the costs.
@NomenClature-o8s
EV owner here. it’s fantastic if you can charge at home like me. But fewer and fewer people live in single-family homes these days.
@n1vca
Nobody can expect a country who votes for such a president to understand anything and go for any long term economic goals and environmental improvements ... they will drive their country full speed against a wall if nothing happens very soon!
@antonio_fosnjar
Who would have thought that changing laws left and right every year or so would lead to a complete uncertainty in the market. Companies spend few billion one yeay and then it turns out that current government dropps all support, then the next one premises full support...
@robfala6624
Think the biggest mistake the auto ev industry has made was not to adopt the same thinking that founder ford adopted....make a ev that everyone can afford and not just for the middle class to rich...And also make the infrastructure much bigger(reliable) and available to all.
@davidstrom7425
With the US industry as far behind as they are, I think any retreat from EVs is a retreat from building vehicles at all. What are they thinking they will be producing??
@justinshiosaka9897
As a consumer if I was to buy a new vehicle I would buy a hybrid over a EV I had a Toyota Camry hybrid as rental car while on vacation it was phenomenal getting 50+ mpg great range for long road trips just fill it up like a normal vehicle no waiting at a charging station
@TheAefril
Did anyone consider the cost of living and in practical terms how much disposable income people can afford to pay for an EV these days?
@xiphoid2011
As a Chinese immigrant, I can tell you that it all comes down to whether it makes financial sense. You build EVs that cost more than gasoline ones, with shorter range, takes longer to fill up, and hard to charge for people who don't live in a house, of course most people are not going to buy EVs.
@marinonacci1816
The public buys whatever is marketed to them. If it is told EV's are bad sales drop. This is the power of the fossil fuel lobby. EV's will replace ICE vehicles long term. New tech has always replaced old tech. Just the way it is.
@4svideosforschool
Remove the tariffs on Chinese EVs and we shall see what the demand is in the USA. The US consumer needs EVs will a lower price. Bring on the competition!
@skyblueo
I remember all the flak that the so-called experts gave Toyota for not running headlong into pure EVs. Toyota put their chips on hybrids. Looks like they were the experts and the industry "experts" drank the EV coolaid.
@kevinmahoney9205
I live in a State where they dump salt all over the roads in the winter. I will never spend more than $30k for something that is going to rust away, ICE or electric. I've come to terms I will never own a new car again.
@RB-yj9ng
Canada is allowing Chinese EVs in the coming months. It's just a matter of time before American auto companies feel the impact.
@danielcapson9842
Look at Europe, China, and Australia and you'll see clearly see how free markets without the propaganda and legislative control that the Oil Industry has on our government.
@charleswright9957
Why don't we talk about oil subsidies and why we are still giving big oil billions every year?
@RonnieLeeDuck
This video omits an important part of the story which is that Ford and GM are still committed to next gen EVs. While they haven't come to market yet, they are far down the road to the point they are not turning back on it. Ford is already a few months in to doing a ground up retooling of their Louisville factory for EVs. You don't commit to that unless they are going to market.
