Five years ago, a 13-year-old girl, the daughter of poor wage laborers from one of India’s most marginalized communities, was allegedly sexually abused by one of her neighbors in the village where she lived.
Her alleged abuser filmed it and police are investigating whether he used the images to blackmail and manipulate the girl into being raped and sexually abused by dozens of other men and boys over the next five years.

Charges have not yet been filed and the 58 men remain in detention. None of the accused has spoken publicly about the allegations. Under Indian rape laws, the girl has not been identified.
Violence against women is rampant in India due to entrenched sexism and patriarchy, despite laws being amended to include more severe punishments for abusers.
In August the rape and murder of a trainee medic in the eastern city of Kolkata sparked a nationwide doctors’ strike that brought tens of thousands into the streets to demand change.

You’re hardly alone but here’s what I find funny about that. Social progress has been continuous for centuries. All quality of life metrics have clear upward trends. Maybe it’s not as fast as we’d like, but humans are dumb and relatively young as a culture. The point is it’s moving in the direction it should be, and the timescales or our own lifetimes are nothing, they’re a drop in the bucket. So there’s really no reason not to be optimistic.

As a father of three daughters I find this beyond sickening. I don’t care who the girl is or who the scum are who are doing this. There should be no protection. Give the men to her relatives or the relatives of other victims. That would be closer to justice, even though the poor girl will never be mended by it. Honestly just fking sickening.

Caste system. I had a "friend" in college that used to tell me both him and his father used to sleep with his secretary and because she was in a lower caste had no choice but to relent. Needless to say that was when I stopped hanging out with him.
He also had a servant while he attended college. That was a little weird too but the servant told me that his children would get to go to college free if he performed this duty.

Ive seen it happen over and over where men from india said or did something misogynist or sexist but got defensive and didnt believe that they were being like that at all. It even happened hypocritically when they were chiding someone else for sexism! They literally didnt understand that they were part of the problem. To be fair, i met a few not like that, but more who were and wouldnt accept that they were wrong. It was so ingrained that they thought they were the good guy!

I once read they have to make special condoms for India that are extra small because the regular ones don’t fit and i think of that every time i hear rape stories from India. Just random thoughts. I saw a group of Indian men in their 20s at Costco in America and the way they stared at a young girl there alone was bone chilling. They were making obviously terrible comments in their language. I actually said something to them. I asked “is there an issue here? You need to stop, it’s rude to behave like that in the states, leave her alone.” And they got very nervous and said no no no. I’ll never forget that look.

India has over a billion people. When you look at the statistics per capita, india has a reported 1.7 rapes per 100000 people. For context, the US has 41.8/100000, Canada has 1.4/100000, England/Wales is at 117.3/100000, France is at 58.9/100000, etc.
Of course, we have to take these numbers with a grain of salt. Women are far far less likely to report rape in India than in any of the above countries. But that doesn’t negate that, as of now, it’s not like we are seeing relatively more reports of rape from India than we do from Western countries, it’s just that the population factor makes it seem more common.
