The govn cares more about academic achievements and so does the people, and from a cultural perspective it makes perfect sense. Other countries in the Sinosphere are like that two but since they are richer and have more resources to spend elsewhere, it looks like they still care about some sports.

Do you have any idea how taxing it is for anyone to push themself so hard? It takes an insane level of dedication (not to mention many other factors) to be a high-level athlete. Having multiple injuries is the norm with the exception of some sports, using all of their waking time to train is the bare minimum requirements, their career is also very short-lived compared to almost all of the other careers, they are doomed to compete thousands if not millions of others if they ever want to have any memorable achievement, and most of them are forgotten once they retire unless they are the very best. It's totally different from playing a sport for one's own health and enjoyment.

Yea I would say the glory of the olympics was when they had really unique and traditional sports such as marathon, weight throwing, archery, etc... The value of Olympics really got diluted when they started introducing more mainstream nicher professional sports.
It also doesn't help that since 1936, Olympics has been more about showing off the host countries and their economic might so a ton of resources get drained just for the grand ceremonies and all the facilities they have to prepare. Countries are literally rejecting to host the Olympics rn due to uncertain economic situations.
Imo, Olympics basically went from a game where people around the world can participate in sports to basically getting money and show off to the world what your country is capable of. Olympics has lost its original sportive spirit long ago ever since 1936. It's still occasionally fun to watch all the different games but it's so diluted that I rather watch one focus tournament for one game.

I said Vietnam is not prioritizing training pro athletes. In general, training or investing in pro athletes or not training pro athletes doesn’t really add a dramatic value to a country. Nobody looks at cuba/north korea/iran differently when they win a gold medal.
Almost half of North Korea is suffering from hunger, but they train olympians. Does that sound normal to you? They do it because it’s the only time they can show themselves in the world, unlike Vietnam.
Lastly, you and a lot of people are downplaying france, american invasion and embargo, calling it “the oldest excuse from the book”.
You cannot simply ignore it, it’s a fact, just like corruption is a fact.

How can this even be a surprise? Vietnam does not have the structure in place to nurture, train and fund talent. In fact, many of the sports at the Olympics are unheard of in VN simply because of lack of exposure - no socialization of the unknown sports to kids to develop interest and participation in, no coaches, no developed leagues/associations, no national funding, no proper training facilities. It's a no brainer.
