It is. Okay, maybe it depends on how you define "worth the read" as.
But personally: It is.
Some do consider it obsolete, but I believe certain chapters are relevant.
Not to mention that some quotes sound badass. I mean, come on, look at this:
“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.” How awesome does that sound?!
Originally, it is a text meant as a guide on how to be victorious at war and govern a state optimally.
Why do I feel it to be relevant? Well. Let's look at some of the points Sun Tzu makes in it.

"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting."
My interpretation: Victory is not necessarily through violence. Do not waste your energy or your enemy's/rival's/competitor's.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
M I: Applicable in competitive sports, I feel. For me, this was DoTA (which I was mediocre at but anyhow, I reached that level from being very bad).
“To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.”
You hear this everywhere. Interpret as you see fit.

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”
M I: Confidence. Belief in one's certain success. Then go perform whatever it is one will. Positivity, mental imagery, all that jazz.

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity”
M I: Even when things are a complete mess, never fear! An opportunity will come around. Never worry. =)

“So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”
M I: Allow me to reference DoTA again. The game works in such a way that you bide your time, gain experience and items with which you gain the strength to eventually defeat your enemies. If you try to go headfirst and finish the game blasting through the various towers and traps which are all around, you are sure to suck. So, at the beginning, you attack with caution, take out what characters are weak and can be handled with relative ease, and THEN eventually, go achieve your obxtive.
In terms of war, you wouldn't want to keep attacking a fifty-foot wall. A better way is to find a weak spot and infiltrate it. I think. Notanexpertonwar,pleaseforgivemyignorance.
Such gems abound in plenty in the text. There are a LOT more. The latter half of the book deals with actual war strategy. Which may have been relevant at the time the book was written, not as much now. I got bored there, I did read it though. It might sound like something along the lines of self-improvement, or it might not.
I'd say you should give it a read, though. =)

Thanks for the A2A. Yes, most definitely worth the read. It's about how to deal with conflict situations. Not just war but any type of conflict. I highly recommend the Denma Group version in English, which has the full text, full text interspersed by commentary, and articles about the wider meaning and historical context . Sun Tzu teaches the value of planning, of not acting out of anger, of indirection and misdirection, of keeping the big picture in mind, of the importance of acting decisively and even ruthlessly when the situation requires it, of how to lead people and organizations. Above all, it teaches that winning without battle is better than 100 victories in 100 battles. It is one of the most influential texts in history and rightly so. It is how tiny impoverished North Vietnam defeated the United States.

It is worth reading. Art of War teaches us about the how to build yourself, your business, or your nation to be succesful. It is a systematic and comprehesive frxwork with clear know-hows. Every term Sun Zi introduced, he explained it in subsequent text. Here are some key ideas:
1. Know the 5 factors of Philosophy, seasonal/weather timing, terrain advantages, commanders capability, and organization policies and practices.
2. The best strategy is to win without a war. You build your strength so strong over others that they willing surrender to your leadership. Any warfare creates destruction and should be avoided if possible. However, if it has to be done, win it as decisively as possible in the shortest time with minized loses.
3. Know yourself by knowing others first, and operate in the right time and place such that your abilities becomes strengths over others.

It is actually the easiest war book to read in many ways. Simple wording, simple concepts, and it’s not overly technical (if at all) regarding weaponry and tactics. It is also a short book, much more so than Clausewitz on War (which is still a great book) or other behemoths. All of those points makes it timeless, easy to access and not likely to get obsolete (as significant details on the technology, tactics and weapon systems of the time would be seen as useless now).
The Art of War is brilliant at strategy and the bigger picture and is easily applicable to war, business and other aspects of life. Sure a lot of it is philosophy, and to winning without fighting but that is the point. It focused on knowing the enemy, being prepared, and making war a last resort.

The Art of War has been an important part of my life for 40 years now and continues to influence my thinking today. I have read the axioms it contains many times and continue to learn from them today.
First, is the text - in translation - difficult to read in term of vocabularly, syntax or idiom. The answer is an unequivocal no. In fact, anyone with reasonably proficient reading skills can pick up the text and articulate the words.
The next part is much more challenging: is the text difficult to understand? I see The Art of War like climbing a mountain. the further you climb into understanding the text, the tougher the going becomes.
Perhaps the hardest thing for me was to acknoweldge just how accurate are Sun Tzu’s assessment of mangement techniques - and managers - and in doing so I exposed my manifold failings and weaknesses as a leader. Sometimes, I felt deeply ashamed of my inadequacies but, somewhat ironically, this embarrassment made me strive harder to reach ever greater levels of understanding.
If you want to reach out to the heights of a Taoist adept, you’d better be ready for a rough ride!

I find the best way to understand the text is actively try to not understand it. Rather than bringing Western techniques of comprehension I always find it better to go out of my way not to force understanding but to let the ideas wash over, and through, me. In this way, they are absorbed into the deepest parts of my mind.
I would add that to read The Art of War with the aim of even the most superficial understanding you need to be in a safe, peaceful environment where you feel able to remove the normal cognitive barriers which keep us all sane and socialable because the text throws up many demanding ideas.
The final part of reading the text is perhaps the most difficult. The Art of War demands critical, reflective thinking about one’s performance, skills, duty and personality. I find this process both extremely stressful and yet wonderfully invigoratiing and this is why I return to the text every year - or more often than this.
Would I recommend it? I’m not sure that I would except perhaps as an ancient oddity to skip through for an hour or so. The problem is that the very moment after that first point of revelation you will have crossed the Rubicon and from that point on the book will always be with you.

Let me take a moment, here to opine on the difference between art and something you enjoy.
If you show me a painting by Michelangelo, or have me read something from Shakespeare, or show me photographs done by Ansel Adams, I may or may not see their beauty, but honestly, I probably wouldn’t see what makes them any better than other paintings, plays and photos done by competent artists in a similar style.
So what makes one mind-blowingly important and the other a cheap knock-off? History.

The reason Michelangelo was great wasn’t just because his paintings were beautiful, that’s a matter of opinion and taste. The reason he was great was because he influenced artists who came after him, who then influenced artists who came after then, and so on. Ultimately, it’s fair to say that most of western art would be different if he hadn’t come along. Whether I, personally, like him or not, I’m living in a world that he created, at least in terms of art.
And this the point of The Art of War. By modern standards, it’s not a particularly useful military treatise. A lot of its instruction is not especially useful to modern warfare (one instruction is watching for birds to indicate when an enemy army is nearby). And that which is still useful is generally basic and obvious to anyone with even the slightest understanding of modern military doctrine.

But the point is, the reason it’s obvious now is that we have centuries of military doctrine, which generation after generation of soldiers have been trained in, and which even the general public is often at least kind of aware of, though pop cultural osmosis. But each of those generations learned from the generation before, which means it’s all built on a foundation of the people who came up with it first. Sun Tzu wasn’t the only person to do that, but he was one of the seminal thinkers on the matter.
The point is, if you turn to the Art of War to teach you about battle nowadays, it’s unlikely to teach you much. At best, it may be motivational, and give you some basic principles to focus on, but it won’t teach you to fight. But as a piece of history, it’s hugely important, because so much of what came afterward was based in it.
