Well I cannot speak on the behalf of all Japanese people, especially because our generation gaps' have such different views of people of different ethnic/national origins, but in a general sense, most Japanese people typically do not care all that much.
From my own personal perspective, it is a bit different because I have both Japanese and Korean ancestry, so I think very well of both countries. Although I am not as culturally tied to Korea as I am with Japan (I lived in Icheon for only 3 months of my life, I lived in Tokyo for 9 months and I frequently come and go to visit my family), I still do support Korea and, to some people's surprise, do not think lowly of them at all; literally half of my friends are of Korean descent as well (It's hard to find any other Japanese people in New Jersey lol). In my eyes, whatever bad blood that was started in the past between Japan and Korea is exactly what it is; in the past (This can turn into a whole other issue when regarding Japan's atrocities towards Korea and other Asian countries during WWII, but for the sake of being relevant to this answer, I will not dwell into the generalities nor my personal opinion of this now). Hopefully in the near future, Japan and South Korea can become great allies that trust each other fully and cooperate on an equal level.
Most Japanese think South Korea is a developed country.
Some Japanese ladies are very fond of K-pop. When I was working at a 7–11 store near my university, a Japanese girl has left her Bigbang Concert blue DVD on my cashier desk(the desk is big and a lot of sight obstacles there). She was quite happy and thankful when I gave the DVD back to her a few days later like she had looked for it for a while.
Some Japanese have a negative images toward Korean and Chinese. They generally think Japan and Japanese culture is superior than her neighbor countries. They would show their dislike of South Korea in front of me, and I am pretty sure they would show their disk of China in front of if am not Chinese. After I told them, that Korean (language) might be the most close language to Japanese, they felt regretful that two countries have a bad relationship and showed the attitude that it shouldn't be like this.
I know, but I really don't want to publish it for risk of offending my friends in both Japan and South Korea. All I will say is that the Japanese did not win any friends in Asia from the oppression and savagery they exhibited throughout the seized territories held by the Imperial Japanese Army. All that can be found in the history books so it does not bear repeating in any greater detail here.
Since everyone is too damn polite...
According to Tokyo Shinbun, one of the most left leaning papers of the nation, Japan likes Koreans more than Koreans like Japan - and this has been a universal truth throughout recent history.
Solid red line is Japanese saying they like Korea. The trend goes to an impressive 77% at the height of the Korean drama boom. Then with a couple anti Japanese leaderships later, now it is at a historic low of 31.3%. Solid blue line is Korean view of Japan at the same period.
Dotted lines are % of people with unfavorable opinion of the another.
haha I just had a trip with my Korean friends and they know I like Japan very much.
They said to me:
"I don't like Japan!"
"why? you have Japanese friends"
"I like the people but I don't like the country"
I’m wondering what was their specific standard of “liking” and “not liking”. I think overall most S Koreans will say they dislike Japan referring to Abe’s government. BUT if the question is Do S Koreans like Japanese people, I think the answer should be a lot more positive. Except for the older generation, I’ve noticed that the perception of Japanese people seems positive overall.
How many of 77% will go their home. open internet browser, and curse Korean from behind? I wonder :D
So from this graph, I can safely conclude that most Koreans doesn't like Japan? I'm really surprised.
It’s mostly due to their current anti-Japanese government. You can see the debacle a few years back when they keep bringing the comfort women problem and (seemingly) doesn’t it resolved.
The young’uns? I think they mostly get along just fine, with globalization erasing most nationalism anyway.
Yes! Japanese that's unafraid to speak his mind! Quora needs more of you!
That poll really go up and down. It went from 71 to 31 in ten years period.
And Is that solid blue line represent Koreans that answered they are favorable to Japan? Only 13%????
Any idea why anti-Japanese leaderships came out around 2003 afterwards? Nationalist xenophobic rhetoric usually came out during economic recession, but Korean economy was doing amazingly well at that time (and also now). This is weird.
Historically Human and cultural flow always has been for thousand years Korean Peninsula to Island called Japan. Never opposite direction except for Hideyoshi ( Pottery War) and 36 years Japan Military Fascist Occupation.

When I first learned Japanese (in the 1980s) an idiom which came up several times referenced it. Americans often describe something as "so simple even a child can do it" or lately as "even a caveman can do it." The Japanese equivalent was "so stupid even a Korean can do it." When I resided in Japan (more than twenty years ago) there were efforts being made to eradicate this saying and replace it with various other comparisons. Compare that to say, Americans ending the use of the word 'black' and replacing it with African-American. But in subsequent trips or contact I have found the change has stuck.
I'm not japanese but I can talk about.
South korea = "animaiton!!!!!!"
I think Korea likes only animations, but Japanese love K-pop.
If Japan is taken over the Dokdo, All of the korean will
attack japan.

South Korea is on a generally on the good side in terms of image.
I have been to South Korea for business (South Korea accounts as part of my business region) many times and know that people are respectful and nice almost the same as I would feel in Japan. I also want to point out doing business people are logical and reasonable.

Having said that if you continue to use that as an excuse for justifying an riot acts and tempered public behavior, you are loosing respect from other countries.
Many Japanese don’t understand why Koreans would be so “over-excited” and carried away in such a modernized world.
These issues must be worked out from both sides.
Japan actually has a weaker position in terms of historical issues since we lost the war and caused damage. However if Japan is trying to explain the background truth about the history thus of her weak position, I hope that South Korea will try to listen logically because Japan may not be telling a lie. It has nothing to do with nationalism.
Please read American and European point of view as well it should show more than what our governments are saying.
I like South Korea, I would love to see that we get even closer in our future because we can further help out each other in this world.
