The My Lai massacre was an absolute war crime and can be considered one of the dirtiest blots on the US military and the military values they stand for (or should stand for)! There is really nothing else to say about this. In the aftermath of the massacre, another disgrace was then made public, namely that it is a criminal shame that only Lieutenant William Calley was sentenced to life in prison for this evil, but - even worse - that after only three days President Nixon allowed him to leave prison to be placed under house arrest ( for about three years). The soldiers were told they were saving the free world. That they were liberators. Its why so many volunteered in the beginning. When the people youre fighting hides amongst civilians, everyone becomes a possible enemy. When your buddies are getting killed by the people you were told you were saving, moral becomes hopeless. Life becomes cheap. And you do things your younger AND older self will find deplorable.

Facts about Lt. William Calley were broadcast and he was jailed for his crimes. Sentenced to life but Richard Nixon Commuted his sentence and he only served 3 days in prison. I saw this first hand growing up during the Viet Nam era. The war was always all over the TV when I was growing up. I even remember On December 1, 1969, the United States held its first draft lottery, which gave young men a random number corresponding to their birthdays. Men with lower numbers were called first, and could possibly be sent to the Vietnam War. I was Nine and my number was low I remember asking my father if I had to go to war. he told me I had to be 18 yrs old to be drafted, so I was ok, but it still scared me at the time being young and growing up with the war all over TV.

I am ashamed to find out that one of the officers that gave the order to kill the civilians hada hispanic last name. I don’t know if Medina was a Filipino or a Hispanic but it was a shameful act of cowardice. I saw the trial on t.v. when I was a little girl with my parents but was too young to comprehend.

They lighted her up anyway. The villagers were executed, and their bodies, were all dumped into pig pens. Then onto the next village.

Me Lai was a tragedy but all the troops coming home paid a horrendous price especially being unacceptable and unwanted by government and civilians. Not everyone did Me Lai. And no one mentions the atrocities that were suffered and the testing of curgs and chemicals on the Vietnam Soldier.

I know the story... I was around 9 yo maybe when I learned about this war for the first time. Despite I was a girl playing Barbies in giant pink castles I was always driven to the war theme so much. Even after the cold war ''ended'' I was raised in a society with so much hate towards America. So I wanted to know more about this country. And the most horrifying thing about it was Vietnam war. I hate that war. It was such a dirty war my gosh... Though those guys who tried to stop that hellish massacre are absolute heroes. And only then I knew about what Japan did. In common. To other nations. Other people. But none of these countries learned their lessons. But of course all of them also has some amazing people. The real national treasure. And all those three countries fighted communists. Like they were no longer humans. Disgusting.

The US, however, is the only nation in history that dropped nuclear bombs on two major cities - civilian populations, not military bases. The official justification is that "many more millions would have died in further combat, because of the unyielding nature of the Japanese." They had went thru the village and were leaving when they received fire from within the village. It was known to be a VC village and when searched weapons and ammunition was found. Civilians were not supposed to have weapons. Many VC fought wearing civilian clothes making it harder to identidy them as VC. One picture in this video shows a vc in civilian clothes that was captured in Saigon and was executed during TET by the police chief of Saigon. There were no front lines in Vietnam, The whole country was a war zone. I arrived at the main gate of Tan Son Nhut one morning. As i was walking into the gate two shots rang out. Two VC pulled up on a motorcycle and shot and killed tewo army members also arrivign for work. They were unarmed. The VC were wearing civilian clothes and disappeared into the crowd before anyone could get a shot at them. Yes atrocities were committed in Vietnam by both sides.Maybe the U.S. govt should have declared an actual war instead of a police action. Since it was not a declared war, we had no protection under the Geneva Convention. I fought in Vietnam and came home anti-war simply because we had no business there. We were all considered expendable. I don't think we have had a valid war since WW II.I will not jujdge what happened at My Lai, i was not there.

I was born in 1960, 5 years after the Vietnam war started. I remember all the protests where people were calling our troops baby killers. I didn’t want to believe that our troops would kill innocent men, women and children but I guess some of them did and they got off scot free.

My understanding is US would drop leaflets for days to the population to leave a designated area, then after deadline anyone that stayed would be considered enemy combatants a a free fire zone. I can imagine the frustration from the military in trying to deal with active military in civilian populations but clearly led to innocent deaths

I've no doubt that the war in Vietnam was necessary. It should have been done differently. It was a lot of problems with what they were doing, but if you look at North Korea and South Korea, North Korea is a pretty decent indicator of how Vietnam would be doing if it went full Communist
