The hotel business is notorious for underpaying it's personnel, which it has been doing for years. Working in a hotel is hard, demanding and exacting work - whether one is working in the kitchens, cleaning bedrooms, bathrooms and toilets, or working front of house. Having worked for many years in the catering trade, I can say that the pace of work + the workload itself is relentless. While many hotels rely on migrant labour forces and agency personnel, there are also many who have contracts with their hotel employers. However, even so, the hours are long, the work is hard and the pay scale is minimal. On the back of this - hotel companies rake in vast profits; especially so from high end clients and corporate events. In essence, it is tantamount to slave Labour.
