The reason is India was stranded for paying in rupees only. Which was no good for Russia as they can not trade in rupees with other international countries.

@Surojeet Chatterjee They need a currency which they can trade with other countries. Just having a a currency is not enough. To trade you need Vostro and nostro accounts. Russia needs a more liquid currency. It already has lot of rupees which they are nit able to use.
