I completely understand the South not wanting to foot the bill for the reunification between North and South. I'd just pint out that it is inevitable (probably) and so the South should prepare for it.

I'd add that it won't be possible until China changes too. China will not allow a a country with US military on its doorstep.

@Michael DeBellis That's just the issue, though. The leadership in the North would probably never accept reunification because it almost certainly means they lose all of their power. That's why I personally look at this more pessimistically, because both states are so institutionally and politically incompatible.

I’ve been stationed here in South Korea for some time. From my talk with the ROK army and just regular people there isn’t a huge desire for reunification. They see the northerners as alien and or just don’t want to pay for it.

As a South Korean, I think unification is almost impossible.
The language is really different, and the food, clothing is already very different.

i doubt it, as a south korean, we feel less connected to north korea by the day; It seems they're less like us; the people of north and south korea are diverging culturally. The longer Korea is split the harder it will be to unite.

North Korea is not in decline. It is at risk, sure, in that it's food security, but we are unlikely to see a period like the Arduous March again as China would likely provide aid to the DPRK. We are seeing a situation in the 21st century where, as long as US power wanes and Chinese power rises, the DPRK will be able to develop and we are likely to see a resurgent North Korean economy.
