The Mexican high tech export is purely based on assembly ( Maquila ). Panasonic, Plantronics, Sharp , Samsung, LG, Sony, Foxconn , etc. All this companies and some more have assembly facilities in Mexico. So Mexico is "dominating" based in a cheap labor and luckily because is right next to the biggest consumer of the world , USA. But this does not make Mexico a real High Tech exporter. Mexico's economy has become increasingly oriented toward manufacturing since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) , but all that income belong to high tech companies are mentioned above and none of them are Mexican. So the numbers you see in this video are an illusion , otherwise Mexico would not have 42% of their total population living below the national poverty line. Don't be so happy

But I agree that they're not Mexican companies and the "research and design" is not Mexican....but the mere fact that Mexico is competitive as a manufacturer of "high-tech" products, as opposed to merely being a manufacturer of textiles and agriculture etc. as most other big Latin American countries are.....it means in the future Mexico will become even more competitive and eventually have its own firms....just like China, India and S. Korea which ALL started first by manufacturing for foreign companies.

@Walks and Such Mexico is not competitive, the supposed "competitiveness" you mentioned is nothing more than cheap labor, more than 50% of the entire workforce in Mexico with very low wages.
Being among the largest exporters of manufacturing does not make it one of the most industrialized, countries like Brazil that export much less manufacturing have more manufacturing in their territory, only exports less because it is an economy oriented only to the domestic market.

@Lumzes you''re partially correct and partially not. Brazil is close to twice the population of Mexico, and it''s the largest/richest nation in the region so of course they export less. Nevertheless, Mexico has a higher GDP per Capita (most years) and a higher HDI than Brazil. China started off as the ''sweat-shop of the world'' because it''s ONLY resource was cheap labor; it oriented its economy towards providing that cheap labor for foreign companies; neverthless, as time passed, the quality and skill of chinese labor improved and foreign companies began using Chinese labor for higher-tech products etc. eventually, Chinese manufacturing industry began to focus on the R&D, and then Chinese firms began to create their own products...now, less than 30 years, Huawei has surpassed Apple in phone sales in the world...and Huawei products are often superior to Apple or even Samsung products.

The thing is that America mostly produces for itself since high end products made in America will be too expensive for most other countries including even Europe. That’s why America is low in the list.

I'm from Hong Kong, and I know for sure Hong Kong doesn't manufacture much, hi-tech or low-tech. Hong Kong is a services economy, and the biggest industries are finance and tourism. HK used to make small electronics and even had a sizeable textile industry back in the 1980s. That was a long time ago, and Hong Kong's labour costs can't possibly compete now. Port of Hong Kong is still important, but it also points to the fundamental fact: Hong Kong is nothing more than a city where a lot of trade between Mainland China and the outside world still pass through.
