What is it about beer that you really like? It’s not about ONE beer, but MANY beer types and styles. Let me broadly hit some of the less-obvious factors first:
Craftsmanship. Every brewer chooses hops, barley, water, yeast, and a specific recipe to achieve a certain result. This understanding contributes to my enjoyment of beer.
History. Brewing beer has been around for thousands of years. During that time brewing has served many roles — celebrations, quenching thirst, relaxation/pleasure, and saving lives when other things (like local water supply) weren’t healthy and could kill you if you drank them.
Exposure to different styles and flavor profiles. Ok, this is the traveler and adventurous person in me speaking… Unless you’re stuck in a serious rut, beers are a great way to experience many different flavors from many different ingredients from many different parts of the world from many different styles of brewing. I don’t like IPAs as a general rule, but you know what, I do drink them every once in a while, even those labeled “death by hops” and stuff like that. I learn from it. I must expose myself to more than just the things I like in order to really understand more about beer in general. Of course I still gravitate towards my favorite lagers, and even a number of stout and dark beers, but I’m enjoying the fact that I’m an informed drinker versus just a “guzzler” if you get what I mean.

Continuing on then, broadly, the most obvious:
Taste. If you are inclined to appreciate the flavors of beer (some never do and they avoid it) eventually you may come to really like the taste of the huge variety of styles and flavor profiles. This is pretty obvious, but needed to be said. I’m always surprised by friends of mine who exclusively drink Bud Light. They love it and won’t switch. While there is nothing really wrong with that, there are certainly many reasons not to get stuck in a rut. We are currently brewing the best beers in the history of the world — it just makes little sense to me to not reach out and explore a few other beers once in a while. This is where “to each his own” applies and I respect that. As stated earlier, I’m not a stuck-in-a-rut guy, and I’m very adventurous and curious with my food and drink.
Now, having said all that, I have in the past 12 years made a dramatic shift away from beers and towards cocktails, and mostly for the same reasons above. I haven’t given up on beers - I just discovered the similar histories and depth involved in cocktails. And I fell in love with the fact that I can create classic cocktail masterpieces at home for myself and for friends in minutes which is something I cannot do with beers. And that is why I have one of the largest home bars in my city. For the home drinker cocktails are very flexible and fluid, with many spur-of-the-moment options available. That’s harder to achieve with just beers. But they are two very different part

I won’t deny that alcohol doesn’t play a role in why I or others like and enjoy beer. We all can say taste and that is very true. But I wonder if I would really be drinking beer if it didn’t. If alcohol could be removed without affecting the flavor or body of the beer I don’t think many would be drinking beer. It doesn’t have to be high alcohol, even session beers with low alcohol at 3.5% would still be enough alcohol to enjoy the beer. Having a beer with the alcohol to relax with people is enjoyable even at 3.5%.
With that said taste is an important part. The malt, the yeast and hop variety all lend to taste and aroma (which influences and is a part of tasting) of beer. Other ingredients can be added too. Like preparing food, it is fun to combine different flavors to experience more complex flavors that are balance. Balance is key factor whether it’s food or beer, in getting the right complex flavor. When I go to a brewery or pub with variety of beers in their line up I like to try samples that are referred to as a flight. It’s like going to an art museum where you enjoy looking at different paintings and sculptures. These flights are like an art museum for the tongue rather than the eyes. It is also fun to pair with food to bring another dimension to the enjoyment of taste.
Another reason for beer, though not exclusively for beer, other drinks like wine or coffee or tea serve the same purpose as well, is the camaraderie it brings about in social gatherings. Food does this too but drinks are just easier and more informal.

I didn't always. In my 20s I regularly went to a club to see local bands perform. I started out drinking Corona with extra lime. Corona made me less bloaty than Coors Light or whatever else 20 year old girls drink, and the extra lime made it palatable, like bitter-limey pop. Then I “graduated" to liquor. Tequila mostly, just shots, with a big up of ice water to sip on. I never got hungover, I guess it was all the water. I drank to get drunk, pure and simple. I grew up a little and stopped drinking so much, occasionally wine, white at first, then red.

Then one day a friend and I ducked into a bar to kill time before a movie and they had Angry Orchard hard cider on tap. It was new and the bartender raved about it. She served it in a pint glass with a cinnamon-sugar rim. It was delightful! The perfect mix of favor, like wine, and carbonation, like beer. And it didn't make me drowsy or hot like wine did. I've since moved on from hard ciders, starting with the dark heavy stuff, porters and stouts. Did you know some beers have flavor profiles like wines? I'd always liked the descxtions of wines like, chocolate and cherry notes, dry finish, that sort of thing. Only I could never taste that stuff in wine. I can totally taste it in beer. I think my tongue was made for beer. There is always something new to discover in beer, especially now when it seems a new brewery pops up every week. And did I mention micheladas and beer cocktails? Also delicious.
So I didn't always like beer, at least not the swill put out by the big guys. And it took mass-produced hard cider for me to discover it. Go figure.

infinite diversity in infinite combinations. It’s the same reason I enjoy any food or beverage. I love to explore different flavours and levels of subtlety and complexity. I believe that beer is a great platform for this, due to the varied nature of the brewing process, the possibilities allowed by adding different ingredients (unless you’re a subscriber to old German laws), and the complex flavours created by ageing and blending beer.
I love that there are so many different styles and sub-styles, and then interpretations by many brewers within each of those styles. Whatever I’m in the mood for, there’s a beer for that.
I love that the craft beer movement has given us back the joy of creativity and discovery in a beverage as old as agriculture.
I love that it’s a social beverage, almost always shared in good company.
I love the smell of the brewery at 6am as I’m mashing in a batch of beer!
I love that none of this takes anything away from drinkers who just want to enjoy what they’ve been brought up with as “beer” as a fairly flavour-neutral, refreshing, alcoholic beverage to enjoy without giving it another thought.
What is it about beer that I really like? Oh, you know, just everything.

To be truthful, I enjoy beer and wine equally. But I far prefer the company of beer drinkers to wine drinkers. There is solidarity amongst beer drinkers. Much more likely to talk and be friendly. It is more of a populist choice. Wine drinkers can turn on each other. Plus, I can enjoy local beer in everywhere in the United States. I can’t enjoy local wine everywhere. Anyone can make beer on a limited scale. For these reasons, I enjoy beer.

I was a beer can collector at one time in my life. There were 2,200 different cans on shelves in my basement. I think there were 30 Falstaff by themselves. Iron City must have had close to 40 back in the mid-1980’s. I never found a St Pouly Girl or the Playboy Girl cans. Budweiser had many. Their first flat top can, was yellow and black. The worst beer I ever tasted was Eslinger out of New York, City! It had a Knight on a Horse.
It’s safe to say my friends and I tasted many great beers. Peiffer and Old Dutch were two that tasted great. Once Pittsburgh Brewing started making it, wasn’t the same as Old Dutch Brewing. At one time in America, there were 5,000 Breweries. Each city had a brewery. Prohibition killed many great Breweries.
After that period in time many “Mom and Pop Breweries” Never can back. Some did well-making soda pop. So they survived prohibition by making sodas. The King of Beers did well also. They set beer overseas to supply the Army, Marines Navy and the Airforce. Truth is many Brewers sent beer overseas.
Budweiser got greedy in the 80’s. They came to Toledo where I lived and undersold Buckeye. Our Hometown Beer. They closed and other beer makes took over that brand. They came close in flavor but it wasn’t the same. So getting back to your question. “Taste is the number one reason I drank good beer.” There are many Mini Brewers out there today that are making great beers. Shinner Beer out of Shinner Texas makes the best Bock Beer.

What’s not to like about it?
There are more than 1500 types or variants of beer across the world, there are not other beverage with that type of diversity (not even wine).
Easy to make and ferment, you could easily make a decent one at your home garage.
Beer could meet any palate, there are sweet, alcoholic, bitter, acidic, chocolaty, fruity, herbal and the list goes on.
It makes you feel relaxed and outgoing.
It’s cheaper compared with other alcoholic beverages
Beer has survived the fall of many empires, two world war wars, many pandemics, just to become now the third most drinked beverage in the world (we will get you TEA)
Beer makes you happy, at least for me

“Taste in anything (food, beverages, art, music, clothes, etc.) is a personal value judgement. We don’t all like (or dislike) the same things.
I’m going to guess that if you are just beginning you adventures in “adult beverages” your current taste is probably shaped by sweet sodas and fruit juices. Most beginning drinkers don’t like dry wines and “hoppy” beers.
Just remember the rule for alcoholic beverages: “Find what you like to drink, sip it slowly and enjoy every sip.”

What do you consider beer? That watery tasting slightly yellowed alcohol beverage sold in cans and bottles pretty much everywhere produced by conglomerate beverage producers? If that is what you consider beer, then no. If I want a refreshing sweetened beverage, I’ll drink soda or juice. They taste better and I don’t end going to the bathroom as often.
On the other hand, if you’re talking about independent brewer products that follow traditional brewing processes making relatively small batches in a variety of styles, then, yes. And not just yes, I love it yes. The variety of flavors and alcohol content can is a veritable smorgasbord of flavor, which makes it a pleasurable experience without the need to drink a dozen to get a buzz.
