Once again great interactions with the local folks to extract fun and historical details about the area and themselves. Amazing drone shots too! :D
Thank you Katherine for being so honest and frank about your separation from Wei. Good that you have clarified this as it was in our mind what happened ! Trust that you will move on and be a very successful youtuber. I am from Malaysia and is an avid viewer of your channel.
Congrats on hitting 100k subscribers! I've just been in the region last October checking out ancient relics and buildings preserved in the mountains. Definitely fascinating and unique, this part of Zhejiang/Fujian (and where isn't in China, besides the concrete-printed parts of the big cities?). I gather now that you must have finished the task on site - the 14th century Shisi Temple not far from Qingyuan is a gem. Also the ancient covered bridges - there are just too many and impossible to cover all, as the mountain roads are so time consuming!
I would love to make a return trip and do a bike tour from Qingyuan to fujian , it’s one of the most interesting and scenic places I’ve been to since my return from the US ?
That was a wonderful detour trip. The semi-abandoned village could be converted to a beautiful holiday attraction for tourists. Great job Katherine.
Great idea. And also need reasons for tourists to visit. Need an area tourism board to get it going
@gordkao The one Katherine visited is already a tourist destination. I gather it's the flow of revenue that helped to keep the abandoned houses standing.
The point is there are just too many such villages in the region - or in China in general - and not enough drive to make every one of them a tourist destination. And these particular villages in southern Zhejiang aren't very accessible - pull out Google Maps with terrain on, you'll realize even with all the freshly built paved roads connecting the most remote corners to the grid, the mountains make sure it's still hours to get from point A to B.
I love mushrooms so every time I get dried mushrooms at a Chinese grocery store I will be thinking about Mr. Wu thanks to your documentary about him in the mountains. I have petted pet mice before at pet stores so don’t think I would eat mice but these people are very resourceful and I can’t believe the high price of mountain mice. Love the camera work and the drone footage! Looks like a professional documentary!

Very nice trip! The village is sufficiently further away from major urban centers to preserve the original vibe.
I love the scenery, and I love how they try to keep the old style alive.
3:12 It's a mini shrine worshipping the talisman of Wuxian Emperor, a popular deity native to southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian, accompanied by Wu Sangong, a 12th century farmer deified as the local God of Mushroom, also ancestor of Uncle Wu's clan; Liu Bowen, legendary advisor to Hongwu Emperor (think Merlin) , a local of Qingtian County not far away; plus some more commonly worshipped deities. Each part of China have their own local deities, which not unlike the many saints in Christianity, are remnants of much older belief systems. A bit further south you'll likely be in the land of the Monkey King - not as the nation's favorite supernatural hero, but in its original form as a mountain god that dates back to at least a millennia before Journey to the West.
I am super impressed that, for such a remote village, the road is paved into it!
Beautiful drone footage! The mountains of China have such a sense of majesty to them.
It's so cool seeing how people react to you in these rural communities. It must be quite rare for foreign-born travelers to pass through their village, but they treat you as one of their own all the same.
This felt like a documentary of years past by in China. 700 hundred years, I might add. Great job

Wow!! What a wonderful scenery, especially the bridge building over the pristine river.
Such a good experience for you..
It's very thoughtful that concrete houses down below 'clad' the walls with mud to match / harmonise with those historic houses up the hill . And the scenery just so calming.

What a beautiful village and scenery. 700 year history…Wow! This is an Eastern version of some near abandoned villages in Italy. I do hope some of these villages get preserved. I love the details that you’ve captured - the woven hat and cloak hanging on the wall, the kitchen, the alters, slogans on the walls, the outhouse bathroom, etc). These old ways of living, as hard as they were, are a testament to the resilience and perseverance of the people who lived there. I love that you have such an incredibly open mind! You are willing to deep diving and try the local cuisine and delicacies, like rat. Maybe it’s like rabbit or Guinea pig?!? I thoroughly enjoyed watching this village tour. Well done!
Another great video Kate, this is the rural China I like to see. The scenery is beautiful and peaceful , an ideal place to retire. Well edited and I am hoping for more. Thanks for showing the rural village of China, which is disappearing fast.

Jd..., People in China want to live like Americans. It's referred to as progress.
Wow! That semi-abandoned village would be great for like a holiday getaway though some of the authenticity may disappear if that happens...
They were trying to go that route actually but it’s just too in-the-middle-of-nowhere to attract enough people and it’s kind of a niche destination, it’s great if you love urbex ??
@kats_journey_east getting out into the countryside is what I love, when visiting other countries, I would love walking the hills there, is there thriving tourism in rural areas, I was lead to believe it's harder to find accommodation for foreign tourist
Qingyuan is very close to my hometown, I’m so happy to hear people’s accent that I used to use when I was a kid.??
China is blessed with all the natural environments found elsewhere in the world, ranging from Arctic weather in the north to tropical weather in the south. It has breath-taking sceneries of deserts, vast plains, mountains, valleys, rivers, temperate forests and tropical rain forests. There is a living environment to suit everyone's taste. Why would anyone wish to emigrate abroad when they could find their ideal environment in China? The grass is definitely not greener on the other side.
Then you have to ask the Chinese com...st Party.
@dairy77 When you go abroad and suffer discrimination, abuse and racism, don't complain.
That abandoned village is, as NZer say, out in the wop wops. However, I saw a well built road leading to it, and there is electricity supply to door. Incredible. This piggy back ride opportunity for a video like this is just wonderful. There is no other ways we viewers can see this sort of things elsewhere. Thanks a lot mate.

Out in the wop wops, omg, I love that what a cute phrase
This vlog really reminds me of a chinese drama called Minning town. And usually when people in that rural village if they don't relocate to the city but build a sturdy better house than the old one, local govt will subsidized the house.
What a beautiful place! And fancy knowing that many generations of your family without recourse to genealogy.
What a fascinating mushroom man! I will defiantly try eating (mountain) mouse when I go back to China this summer. Everything I ate when I lived there eight years ago was delicious! Thanks for the village tour.
Mountain mice are foods for some southern areas of China as well as in Vietnam. Ethnic Miao (苗族) have the dish of roasting mountain mice. In Northern Vietnam, where the people's ethnic group is very close to Ethnic Miao, they also have the tradition of roasting mountain mice.

love your videos showing the real China. Your Mandarin diction is perfect
What is real China? You mean the beautiful rural China. So the amazing metropolis cities like Shanghai, Guangdong, Shenzhen are not real China.
Qingyuan in Zhejiang? Mighty mountains. Lots of dark stories among people but also brave and conscientious people.
Just love your "off the beaten path" Vlogs!!!
I'm guessing the owner of that half-built abandoned house probably wised up when he realised he was literally six feet away from treating the entire village to a free meal.
In Chinese, "鼠" refers to both mice and rats. Considering the size of the "mice" is about 1 pound for each, I think the animal may acutually be the "rats" rather than mice.
Holy crap! The drone shot piercing down thorough cloud cover felt like you were piloting your own plane sensation. I was pondering how much insulation the self built hut offers then charcoal stove question came into view, better than dying from CO poisoning, hahaha. The dirthouse life on offer is too primitive.
I don't know if this village is in close proximity to Fujian province, their accent surprised me.
It is super close to fujian , I was very tempted to bring my bike down there and make a bike tour out of it but I’ve been too busy with work lately LOL . It offers very little insulation but you also won’t get CO poisoning because of the huge gaps in the wall
Nice village in the cloud! perfect place to grow mushrooms.
It was a big village given the mountainous location.

China used to be really poor, so we used to eat everything, and we could make delicious ones
QingYuan county (庆元县) belongs to LiShui city (丽水市) in ZheJiang province.
This was very funny and fun lol. Hope u had fun
Do not trespass abandoned houses and temples, or walk the forest, esp alone. Just bear in mind.
Great video. Did you say this is only 6 hours from Hangzhou?! Amazing! I thought the areas around Hangzhou are all populated. No forests. Just waves and waves of houses.
It's six hours in a car, that can get u pretty far away Lol but actually there are forested/mountainous places only an hour's drive from hangzhou, like Anji
You should try the mice, which is also good for women after delivery of a baby like the wine you tasted
Very curious what the reasoning is for that ?

I could not do it and I am Chinese by ethnicity. I would be imagining eating sewer rats.
@kats_journey_east What he should look for is a bamboo mouse. An animal that lives in the mountains with roots as food. I don't know if this thing belongs to the rodent family as much as a mouse
@kats_journey_east 他应该找的是一只竹鼠。
@n.c9653 you thinking of New York sewage rat city ??
@kats_journey_east My mother did drunk the wine with baby voles. That was what she told me when I found out some bottles of them
@kats_journey_east 我妈妈确实用田鼠仔泡酒喝。
I had been to qingyuan, mountian long and winding road, mushroom heaven
Is there a place to go to the restroom in the mountain?

I can't believe that the quotation from Chairman M is preserved perfectly on a wooden wall, which is a stupendous or meaningful treasure hunt in the mountains.
Upon discovering that mountain mice are sometimes eaten in China, some people will express their disgust and condescension at China and the Chinese culture and the Chinese people for their supposed poverty and disease and sub-humanity. Some other people whose hearts and souls are pure will instead engage in conversation with the locals and genuinely reciprocate their happiness.
How do we watch the production that you are doing for your office work?
It’s mostly going to be shared by some news outlets and environmental organizations on wechat and douyin, it’s not super accessible unfortunately . and I can’t post it here since my colleague who I filmed it with doesn’t want the exposure on a large-scale YT or bilibili account . She’s in this vid too but requested her face be cut out of all the shots she’s in, but I can’t do that with the mushroom documentary, she’s one of the “main characters” so to speak
