By land area, China is bigger. By total area, it is disputed, but China is almost certainly bigger.
Some sources list the United States as the third-largest country on Earth. However, the U.S. is bigger because its total area includes vast coastal waters and territorial sea. China has never officially published the area of its coastal waters and territorial sea (there is an unofficial figure of 457,000 sq. km, excluding China's claims of the East China Sea and the South China Sea, which are disputed by Japan and some Southeast Asian countries respectively).
If we include this unofficial figure, China is approx. 10,057,000 sq km. Even if we allow a 20% variation, China is still clearly bigger than the United States. That's why most countries outside the U.S. list China as the third-largest country in the world instead.
If China's vast East China Sea and South China Sea claims are included, its area is approx. 14,327,000 sq km, which is about the same size as Antarctica, approx. 1.4 times the area of the United States.
Fun fact:
Alaska is a huge state. Without Alaska and Hawaii, mainland U.S. (excluding the coastal waters and territorial sea) is only about the same size as Australia, and smaller than Brazil.

How much smaller is the United States than China?
This is actually a complicated question. You will see different answers to this question, because of the way the information is compiled.
Some reports include areas such as the Great Lakes as part of the US size, some do not. Others don''t include US territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Saipan, Palau, Guam, etc.).
For China, some reports include Taiwan and disputed regions (India also claims these) such as Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, while others do not. Others do not include Hong Kong or Macao. China also claims the Spratly, Pescadores, Paracel, Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands, so these sometimes show up in official estimates as well.
Also, for both countries, some estimates include territorial waters, which further complicates things, as China tries to claim the 9-dashed line area of the South China Sea as territory, plus with many US island holdings, the size increases if this is calculated.
So, the best answer I can give you is this: It depends on what you want to calculate as total territory and that is also dependent on the validity of certain claims to territory. Total official territories and territorial waters combined, the USA is slightly larger. If all of China''s claims for territories are included, China is larger. If you just take mainland China and the lower 48 states, China is bigger. Add Alaska and Hawaii to that, they''re really close in total land area.
Again, it''s actually a complicated question to answer and open to many interpretations, so I hope this helps.

The USA and China, which one is bigger?
Population-wise, China has about four times the population of the USA.
In terms of land area, it’s disputed. Some sources put the United States third and China fourth, and others have it the other way around. There is a lot of ambiguity because different sources disagree on what, if any, internal territorial waters should be counted, and whether or not Taiwan counts as part of China. In reality, the two countries are essentially the same size.
China is the world’s most populous nation, although it will lose that distinction to India sometime in the next 10 years, and the USA is a distant third. China and the USA are essentially tied for third in the amount of territory they directly rule, behind Russia and Canada.
Consider both criteria together and the winner is obviously China.

What amazes me about the actual answer is how three massive countries (China, Canada, and the USA) can be so similar in terms of land mass. It’s remarkable how they end up within a couple % of each other, such that including surface water area can shift the order.
In terms of arable land, the USA is the clear leader, followed by India, Russia, and China.

China is bigger than the contiguous 48 states of the US. But when we include Alaska and Hawaii, it actually gets complicated. The sizes of the two countries are close enough that we have to start asking technical questions.
Do we include territories that are owned by the country but sort of separate? The US has Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. China has Hong Kong, Macau, and claims Taiwan (there's a hot button issue right there). All of those land areas are tiny, compared to the respective countries, but enough to tip the scales.
Also, there are legitimate questions about how we calculate land area. For example, do we count surface water? Because, if not, you have to subtract for every river, lake and pond in each country (and the size of those varies by time and season), but if you do count it, then the size of America includes our portion of the Great Lakes, which is a lot of area.
Point is, China and the US are close enough in size that the answers to questions like these can be enough to change the answer to who's bigger. China is often classed as the largest, but not always.

How would China win a war against the US?
China would NOT go to war with the US.
What China will do is repel any attack on the homeland and that is why they are occupying islands in the SCS (South China Sea). Those islands are being outfitted with early warning systems and hyper-velocity weapons systems to destroy American shipping and aircraft before they can get to the Chinese mainland.
If it gets too hot then the rest of the world, assuming America attacked first, would more actively than they do already, disavow the US and withdraw any and all support for America. A number may also join with China to help prevent the conflict from getting out of hand.
America has two main tools in its arsenal to ‘defeat’ China. Tariffs was one but that’s not working another was to try and turn the world against China by accusing them of all sorts of bullshit crap hoping that the world would back the US and turn their backs on China - that’s not happening either.
China will win by out-performing the US in terms of trade and in the sciences. China graduates between 10 - 12 STEM scientists for every 1 the US graduates.
America destroyed its education system by starving schools in depressed areas of funding and offering college degrees from for-profit colleges - thanks to Besty DeVos, Trump and the Republicans - that have turned out to be worthless and leaving their students in life-long debt. The elite schools cannot graduate enough good scientists.
China is out performing the US and it will only get worse for America. America will die slowly as China takes over. Most pundits give it a decade or two before China leads the world but NOT as an aggressive, belligerent hegemony. I think billions of people around the world cannot wait for the day America stops trying to run the planet.
