It’s debatable. The Chinese respect education and teachers much more than in the US. Some say the teachers are stricter, but it may just be their culture to respect the teacher, much more than you would find in the US. The Chinese focus on language and math more than in the US. The language because of its complexity and math because that is the language of technology. They tend to be two to three years ahead of US schools. That’s why when Chinese students come to the US, they find the first two years relatively easy and by then they are accustomed to US teaching methods. They focus more on English language. More and more, Chinese schools are trying to emulate western schools that unleashes more creativity than rote. Rote was always the baseline in the past.

My opinion: US schools fail for two reasons. First the lack of respect for teachers and education in general. Second, parents don’t seem to prioritize education as much as the Chinese, or for that matter Asians. Most Chinese parents put the children’s education at the top of their priorities, even if it means sacrifices. Oftentime they will send their children to paid evening and weekend tutor classes, it is that competitive.
My suspicion is that because it is so tough in Chinese schools, parents that can afford it, send their children abroad where it is deemed to be easier to succeed.

Iam an Indian but I will loudly say that China had a way way way better education system than USA, atleast in recent times, after 2010 the education system of USA is totally f***ked up. Take an example for UC Berkeley, Caltech or Stanford while taking admissions for their MS programmes they just sext the applicants randomly, they only look at absurd things like personality, SOP, etc, they don't even care for the academic background or the academic performance of the applicants, neither do they care about the standard/qualities of the college from where they pursued their bachelor degrees. I personally know many examples where applicants who had pursued their bachelors from Tsinghua University or IITs( elite Indian colleges) with descent GPA but they were turned down, whereas applicants who pursued their bachelors from a low standard private colleges of India, they have got sexted.

A2A. Traditionally, the difference was quantity vs. quality. The Chinese system has been structured to educate more people and to instill more factual knowledge in students. The Chinese system was very much oriented to prepare students to take standardized tests. The US system was more geared to qualitative analysis and synthesis. The trend in the US in primary and secondary education over the last twenty years or so has been toward an increasing emphasis on standardized test-taking that has begun to substantially change the emphasis on qualitative analysis and critical thinking.

However, most Chinese students won’t care about their grades unless they get “F” in an exam, partly because of the high graduation rates in Chinese universities. What’s worse, studying in America is an expensive thing, some top-ranked universities’ tuition even more than forty thousand dollars per year. Private schools are better than public schools. MIT is a lot harder than Party Univ. Arts subjects and Science subjects are taught in completely different ways. So the comparison between US and Chinese education system has to take into account a lot of factors.
America and China are both big countries with lots of people. There are a lot of variations from region to region. Everyone's experience will be different.
If you have a lot of homework, you won't have time to criticize the government. You won't even have time to read the news...

Class Size is the first noticeable difference at the middle school and high school level. Teachers typically teach two classes (in an 8 period day) with from 55 to 65 students. American secondary teachers typically teach five or six classes with class sizes ranging from 25 to 30. The Chinese teachers use their non-teaching time to grade papers and to prepare for their classes, except for the head teachers which will be explained later.

While Americans think the "cohort" concept is innovative, China has been using it for decades. Throughout China, students beginning in a school are put into classes and they stay in those classes with one another for the entire time they are in that school unless higher test scores permit them to move to a more advanced grouping.

I wouldn’t say that I am the expert at this because I only have my own experience as evidence.
I am studying abroad this year at Guangzhou University and I have been here since September. So far I have found 3 major differences in education between my classes in the States (Georgia) and China (Guangzhou). The first is that the Chinese classes seem to be about 99% lecture and 1% presentation. In my University in the USA, there is a lot more discussion and debate in classes.

In the USA it is more scattered and it can depend on the professor. 35% essays, 30% exams, 15% homework, 15% quizzes, and 5% attendance.

China, of course. They have a rigorist, meritocratic system with no affirmative action or social promotion. Students start the hard subjects earlier, move through them faster, and those who fail are left behind. In the US, most attention is put on the average and below average students (No Child Left Behind), and the gifted, talented and motivated are ignored or pushed aside. The US abandoned the meritocratic system put into place by President Eisenhower in the fifties for the liberal system we have now under LBJ in the sixties, and it became even worse under Carter in the 70s. One cannot forget that the tendency in a democracy is to pull down those who are outstanding to the level of the rest. As a German exchange student described it to me, “The intelligent are beaten down; the stupid and incapable receive praise and affirmation.” No one has ever put it better or more succinctly.

Most Chinese student attend school in the U.S. because they want a second chance. Because China’s education system is so merit-based, it’s basically “Only the Strong Shall Survive.”
Therefore, the students, being told that they suck at school, come to the U.S. for college—essentially a second chance.
