P.S. - My answer is a little specific to the Indian mentality and the society we live in. These are few things that I feel are extremely overrated and most people are judged on these parameters by friends, family and acquaintances.
Edit 1- This answer became immensely popular. Thanks for all the upvotes. A lot of comments mention that I missed IITs and IIMs in my answer. Well, I missed cause I don't think they are overrated. Being able to get into an IIT or IIM is a matter of pride and needs a lot of hard work. Also, only the best brains can make it into an IIT or an IIM.

1. Money: After you break $10,000/month net, earning more money won’t really make you that much happier. Sure, you can drive a faster car or own a bigger house, but is it really worth all of the effort? I can tell you from experience that the answer is NO!

When I first ate, I did not know the price of this. In India it costs ~ INR 25\\\\\\\\- per piece which I believe is way too high considering both the quality and quantity.
I did not find anything appealing except for the Italian name. And really do not understand why people go gaga over this. May be because we can make a pyramid out of this ? 0_O
or perhaps a bouquet?
or a heart?
Other than this, I do not find anything worth the price.
For me, this round piece is really over-hyped and over-priced.

I seriously don't get the point of wasting your life savings to impress people who give the least fuck about you.
Because, let's fact it-- no one comes to watch you get married; they all come for the free food and the booze, and to bicker about the one thing that's bound to go wrong.
"The starters were great, but the main course is so dull. Damn!"
"They have ice-cream, but it's not low-fat. Can you believe it?"
From being a ceremony that celebrates togetherness, weddings have become a means of orchestrating extravagance. I feel agitated when people save up for years just to splurge it on an ostentatious ceremony.

I would say birthdays are the most overrated.
One day and people go crazy. The day when we are born, we should ideally be spending with people who are responsible for our birth.
And we spend it with everyone except our parents. We are running the whole day to feed people who are just more than happy on the day which marks the end of one more year from our lives.
I have seen people getting wasted and smoking every possible drug on their birthdays. People start putting up countdowns on social networking sites for their D day. Then when the day ends they put up an album on facebook containing 100s of pictures of themselves cutting cakes and supposedly having fun. Then they make a big collage of the gifts they got and put it up on Facebook, whatsapp and instagram. Then they thank their friends on social media for making their day wonderful, something which could be done personally in a more effective way.

Last year I attended a girl's marriage which was organized at a very esteemed and luxurious hotel of our town.
At first glance I was blown away by the captivating decorations and amazing buffet which had almost every kind of North Indian dishes and lip smacking desserts.
I was drooling over the appetizing meal when I saw the bride walking towards the stage.
She was looking gorgeous in her shimmery red lahenga and the guest were gazing the beautiful bride.
Afterwards I came to know the bride's father has spent a lot for her wedding and gifts (read it dowry) which was quite obvious for an Indian middle class family.
