I worked in Japan for 5 years, companies are not willing to take risk or try something new. Some companies still dominate some industries ( Sony is Lead in camera technology). Most companies are unwilling to try foreign ideas
There is little to almost no startup culture in Japan...without that there will not be much innovation
Speaking as someone living in Japan, they are willing to try foreign ideas after they are successful, which ensures they are always at least one development cycle behind.
True.Industry that forgets the start-up spirit is sure to decline. Japan today (especially the IT industry) is like an American comic book industry that ignores customer needs and indulges in self-satisfaction.
I think japan has too much conservatism in Business, and that's not okay in today's world.
@Techy Intelo Europe be the same way.
Like you said, most Japanese hate making risky bets now days.
Due to this Japan lacks the enterprenur spirit!
Less young enterprenurs = less innovative companies = less economic growth!
Most of their population is not only aged but also consists of pure working middle class. Population and it's economy will decline if Japan doesn't make a radical switch like they did before...
I've worked with some Japanese companies and their IT capabilities were stuck in the 90's at best.
Came to Japan in 1975 fresh out of college from the U.S. and found a great job with a large electronics firm. But by 1985, I was already convinced that this country was headed for a colossal crash. I became disgusted with how closed minded the Japanese are to new ideas. The reason for this is employees are guaranteed lifetime employment. There is zero incentive to change. Same thing is happening to China now — only worse.

Have you worked in China?
Not sure about China, they seem to be innovating hard
there are some sort of citizen ranks similar to indian caste system running quietly behind japanese society. once you're put in certain position, you're destined to live in that position for life.
Worse for China?
Good video. I am Korean and I think Korea is following Japan's footsteps. Many companies are slowly losing their influence in their fields and there is a really large real estate bubble that is starting to burst right now. Korea has a personal debt level of 150% to the GDP (number 1 in OECD nations) and on average around 80% of personal Korean assets are in real estate.
The birth rate is catastrophically low at 0.75.

@Rocketman Yeah, Luna was created by Korean. A lot of them invested heavily in crypto and it's quite catastrophic lately due to crypto crash.

I live in sweden and I think south korea and sweden are quiet similar with overpriced housing and personal debt.
I think that Korea is very similar to Japan, but I wouldn't say it's following in its footsteps.
korea will not follow japanese footsteps. why people are asumung that. different country, different culture, different mindset. japanese and korean ethics, mindset, philosophy are completely different. and thus it will not follow japanese footsteps. japan lacks the sense of urgency. whereas koreans have the sense of competiton, taking competitors seriously and unlike japan koreans adapt very fast to new situations.
@Jk korea do follow Japan.
That's what happens when you're a US colony. Other western countries in decline as well. As Kissinger said, it's dangerous to be a US enemy but fatal to be an ally
well without USA and Japan, korea will never reach this level.
I currently live in Japan and coming from "a third world country" I'm so shocked how outdated most of thier software and computers they use are. Yes, they may have far better infrastructure but I realise why most Japanese corporations are now lagging behind is that they don't realise the importance of software. Another big problem are the stagnant salaries and wages making the young and educated yearn to move overseas.
Japanese programmers earn 1/2 of Chinese peers (am referring to big companies of both sides) and have to tolerate 2.5+ times higher living costs (Chinese have to spend their family saving on housing, but the rent in China is so much lower)
The elderly population is an opportunity for Japan in development of robotics.

But who is going to develop it?
the problem on japan is the elderly don't spend money, just saving in the deposit and the young don't have a money to spend. so, its economy's gone ugly even with over 100mil of population.

Japanese Yen is now equal to 150Yen per one US dollar - a cratering of 30% of its value since last year. Japan's average wage has actually fallen compared to the average wage in 1990. Japan is no longer the highest income Asian country.
Lowering the Yen is part of their government's strategy to keep their economy up so that's not really a good indicator that Japan's economy is falling.
@Maden Smith Keeping it a bit lower was a part of their strategy, sure. But not 150 yen to 1 dollar. That would be a disastrous policy. Why? Because it makes importing energy and food very expensive.
Regardless, Japan has an incredible amount of soft power. And it is a remarkable achievement.

Japan didn’t adequately focus on software, instead focusing on hardware, and they missed the digitization transformation
The Japanese economy began to decline when computers, and smartphones became more and more popular. A smartphone can replace a number of electronic devices, like calculators, cameras, electronic organizers, televisions, CD music players, radios, scanner, etc. Japan made a lot of those electronic devices, but with the advent of the smartphone, and computers all of these things became redundant
Everyone who says Japan needs more immigration is 100% wrong, that would lead to more issues. I am from Germany and we've seen nothing but decline here.
A lot of Japanese websites - even new ones, still look like they were made in the 90s.
Japanese companies have fallen behind. IT and software in Japan are awful.
Japanese electronics is going down because of high competition. But, Japanese service and financial industry are getting bigger.

The GDP per capita of Korea surpassed that of Japan in 2019. and average Japanese university grads pay scale is 3/4 that of Korean university grads and the gap is noticeably bigger each year.
The rising interest on Dollar loans was the final nail in Japan's coffin.
biggest reason is the rise of its neighbors as serious competitors
Japanese companies didn't stop innovate lol. They had the highest automation in the world. Their car factories used automated machines
There's no mention of the Plaza Accord which was signed between US and Japan. Its primary purpose was to strengthen the Japanese Yen against the US dollar such that Japanese exports would no longer be competitive in the global market.
