The Stagnating Economy of Canada | Economics Explained

The low birth rate is mainly due to the high cost of living. A lot of Canadians are responsible people and wouldn’t have children unless they felt they could provide a good home for their kids. Not to mention I remember the Canadian government telling people to have less kids. They were saying that in the 90’s.

This is exactly the reason. Japan had a low birthrate because of expensive housing during the 80's bubble.

Canada has added just 8 million people since the start of the century, 21 years and Canada's population went from 30.5 million to 38 million today.
We've had a 'Baby Bonus' payment since WWII.
Who is benefitiary from price inflation ? government , banks or both ?your parents house cost 60k now @ 350k . Would like economist's answer.

@Lawrence Fox IMO inflation is just another way to squeeze more out of people. Like a hidden tax. Not to mention prices go up and what your money gets you goes down.

This isn't exclusive to Canada though. Countries like India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil have low birth rate and it's getting lower and lower because people realized that having fewer kids and giving those kids better life is a better choice than having tons of kids and being poor.
I live in a 3 bedroom house and still wouldn’t have children. Childcare costs are too high.

The number 1 determinant of birth rate is education. More education equals lower birth rate. Canada has the highest rate of high education in the world

Thank you Canada for being so welcoming to immigrants. Its my 6th year now and I came here as a student when I was 18. I have lived in all three major cities in Canada, I started in Toronto and spent 4 years in Montreal studying French, 6 months in PEI and ended up living in Vancouver). I'm a motocycle enthusiast and I visited so many incredible places. I drove my car across Canada this summer. (Quebec Ontario Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta and finally the beautiful British Columbia) Thank you again for such an amazing life experience.
I am a Chinese international student, i have been studying in Canada for 7 years.
Compared with the United States, Canadian society is more tolerant of immigrants, there is less racial discrimination, and people are very friendly and kind.
I hope our two great countries can work through our problems and become close friends again
As an international student in Canada, I agree. Studying here in Canada is not cheap, and it comes with lots of restrictions, but unlike the USA, there's a pathway towards residency after graduation.
Studying in Canada is cheap for people who have Canadian nationality. I'm a Quebecer and university cost like 10 to 20 times less than in the US.
There is a pathway to citizenship through a student visa in the US.
@Noah Remnek there is but it often takes 10-15 or more years bruh

As a farmer in anada, I would like to say that climate change has shown to help us but long term will screw everyone. We plant corn with a 20% yield compared to what was being planted here 20 years ago. Heck, 25 years ago Soybeans in our area we're unheard of but are grown plentiful here.
I’ve been an International student here for 2 years. Undoubtedly it’s the best country on this planet.
indian guy?
Indians are taking all the job and university seats in Canada. They are half of immigrants each year. And they don't give a darn what are they causing ti local populations. Scary Stat is that 300 million Indians want to move to Canada immediately, with Canadian current population near 40 million.

As an Australian who moved to Canada I’ve found that Canadian industries are too afraid to spend money on innovation especially in construction.
I worked construction for some time here in california and i was told that if a construction company won a bid for government work, the pay will actually be doubled automatically for every employee.
Canadian corporations are notoriously conservative when it comes to investing in new technologies and infrastructure. Almost every major industry is an oligopoly at this point, so competition is dead.
From my personal experience Canadian businesses don't want to spend ANY money on employee training, or really any type of investment in technologies. Instead of hiring Canadians, businesses will import TFW'S (temporary foreign workers), and pay them 2/3 of the wages they would otherwise pay.
Worldwide inflation. Looming food crisis in Africa and middle east. Gas prices all time high. Global currencies are in decline while all institutions are predicting recession within one year. Supply chain are disrupted across the globe. There is fertilizer shortage. We are about to have the first depression of our lives.
As a Canadian who has business ties to the US, I seem to think that the Canadian government has less interest for economic growth than their US counterpart. Import policy is more rigid, and the cost is higher. Combined with a much smaller scale of economy, many companies would not enter the Canadian market, instead focusing on the US.
Canada’s cost of living is ultra high while salary isn’t so high especially for newcomers. This discourages staying much longer in Canada. Majority of immigrants flee after few years coz they can find higher salary elsewhere like the US. This leads to brain drain, which has a huge impact to economic growth. That’s why Canada is always encouraging huge immigration.
Many immigrants to Canada use it as a stepping stone into the USA because it’s easier to enter the U.S. via Canada as opposed to say directly from India, China or Russia.

Since the pandemic, a lot of American companies have started hiring tech workers in Canada. Remote work of course. This is extremely interesting for Canadian tech workers, because you keep all of the social securities and overall safe place to live that is Canada but get the American tech worker salary.
unfortunately usa can't save us all just the tech guys
well if you work for US company, you pay taxes to united states government. if enough people do it then Canadian government do not get enough tax money so those social securities will collapse.
I do find it odd that you spoke about Canada's economy without mentioning our biggest asset, our natural resources (namely Oil and Gas). Canada is an exporting nation, and I just think it would have been good to at least mention it.
We left Canada in 2017. At that time wages were too low, taxes too high, cost of living too high, and the quality of health care rapidly declining. It appears that all of these factors got worse during our absence. I guess we're not coming back any time soon. One thing's for sure, I don't miss the weather.
