France and Britain would be facing “serious problems” if they could not say whether they were friends or enemies, Emmanuel Macron has said, insisting that for Paris the UK would always be an ally no matter who was running it.

The comments came after Liz Truss, the clear favourite to become Britain’s next prime minister, told the penultimate Conservative leadership hustings on Thursday that “the jury is still out” on whether the French president was “friend or foe”.

Asked for his response, Macron, on an official visit to Algeria, said it was “not good to lose your bearings too much”. If he was asked the same question, he said: “I wouldn’t hesitate for a second. France is a friend of the British people.”

If France and Britain “cannot say whether they are friends or enemies – and that is not a neutral term – then we are headed for serious problems”, the French president said.

Truss told the hustings in Norfolk that as prime minister, she would judge Macron by “deeds, not words”. Macron said the UK remained “a friendly nation” and strong ally for France “regardless of its leaders, and sometimes in spite of its leaders and whatever little mistakes they may make in a speech from a soapbox”.

Speaking later, Boris Johnson said he had always enjoyed “very good relations” with Macron, who was “a great fan of our country” and “un très bon buddy de notre pays”.

The outgoing prime minister added that relations between the UK had been “of huge importance … They have been very for a long time, ever since the Napoleonic era, basically, and I think we should celebrate that”.

Former senior diplomats and a former French minister condemned Truss’s remarks, saying it was irresponsible of someone likely to be Britain’s next prime minister to disparage a key ally and that the comment would further harm cross-Channel relations.

Peter Ricketts, a former British ambassador to Paris, said Truss’s comments were ill-judged. “We are at the stage of the Tory leadership contest where the contestants need to start seeing themselves, and behaving, as future leaders of the country,” he said.

“France is our closest defence and security ally. We have a 50-year-old commitment to test our nuclear warheads in France. As Britain’s foreign minister, as its probable future prime minister, to insult the president of France, make a joke, indulge in silly point-scoring for cheap laughs, is just plain irresponsible.”

Nathalie Loiseau, a former French Europe minister who now chairs the European parliament’s EU-UK partnership assembly, said the comments were neither conducive to good relations between neighbours nor befitting of a future head of government.

“From a future leader, one expects leadership,” Loiseau said. “And from a future stateswoman, one expects statesmanship. Her remarks fell into neither category.”

She said the comments would do nothing to improve Anglo-French relations, already hit by Brexit and bilateral disagreements, but added: “For years now, France has applied in its dealings with the UK a motto that we owe to you: keep calm and carry on.”

Tensions that built up over five years of ill-tempered negotiations over the UK’s exit from the EU have been exacerbated by a series of cross-Channel rows including over migrant crossings in small boats, fishing licences and the Northern Ireland protocol.

Analysts say Paris no longer trusts London to keep its word, while London believes Paris is interested only in punishing it for Brexit. Hopes that relations might improve after the departure of Boris Johnson do not look likely to be fulfilled any time soon.

“I hope Liz Truss was joking,” Loiseau tweeted. “Although it’s a very bad joke. The only one who will enjoy hearing this sort of comment among friends, neighbours and allies is Vladimir Putin. I suggest not to offer him such a pleasant moment.”

Sylvie Bermann, a former French ambassador to London, said it was important to realise that Truss’s words “were the words of a candidate”. Election candidates “tend to say what they think their electorates want to hear”, she said.

But she said it seemed unlikely that Truss, who is widely expected to be declared the new Conservative leader on 5 September and become the UK’s third female prime minister the next day, would preside over a thaw in Anglo-French relations.

“We, of course, to use her phrase, will judge her by her deeds and not her words,” Bermann said. “But there are fundamental disagreements between Britain and France that are not going to disappear. And given what we know about her positions, I think it’s probable things will get worse.”

I think this sounds like a misunderstanding.
She said she didn't know if Macron is a friend.
Macron said France is a friend of the British people no matter its leader.
They are basically saying the same thing. The difference is she is in the middle of an election and it's a huge political issue the border crossing dispute.
It was a hidden barb and quite deliberate. Macron of course is right. You don't have to like Macron to realise that talking about the democratically elected representative of France in such a manner is not acceptable. Especially if one considers the remarkably close ties both countries usually enjoy

Brit here. To all our European friends please please please don’t think that our cunty, idiotic and divisive leaders speak for us. We want nothing more than to be part of the international community and love our friends in France, Spain and Germany. Sadly our current political party in power has taken a dive to the right and alienating everyone including us - the working people of the U.K. we currently don’t see a way out, please pray for us!
please don’t think that our cunty, idiotic and divisive leaders speak for us.
Then why does the UK keep voting these lunatics in office?
We want nothing more than to be part of the international community
The result of the Brexit referendum tells a different story. The people voted for that.
love our friends in France, Spain and Germany.
And yet, when Farage made horrible propaganda posters calling Merkel a 'Kraut', most Brexiteers (the majority of the country) didn't seem to mind one bit.
we currently don’t see a way out
The next election is your way out. But, again, it seems like a majority of the British public wants this.
The UK is NOT a dictatorship. It's a democracy. And in a democracy, the people are ultimately responsible.
Let me paint a picture of how bad this shit is:
5 media barons own over 80% of British Media (TV, Newspapers etc.), couple that with Cambridge Analytica style meddling, and a 13 year incumbent party being couped by rich elite (see the Tory ‘Advisory Board’ that contribute 80% of Party Donations - with a £500k+ donation requirement for almost weekly access to PM/Chancellor). The whole thing is stitched up.
The last general election was fought and won over Brexit - a promise to enact the will of the people (even though most referendum require super not simple majorities for constitutional changes).
They’ve had nearly a decade and a half to stack civil service, public bodies, and appointments with enablers, yes-men, and sympathisers. And gerrymandering of election boundaries.
God they’re even passing a law right now to disempower our elections watchdog from bringing criminal cases independent of gov… of course after serial breeches of electoral law.
Rishi Sunak wants to make ‘down talking’ Britain a prisonable offence, you currently are legally branded extremist if you have ‘non-British values’ - such as disagreeing with our present electoral system (Google it).
They’ve banned protests that are ‘too noisy’.
God and let’s not start on the surveillance state - most CCTV per sq KM in the world, snoopers charter (even the ambulance can request your internet history) and now the online safety bill.

It’s easy to forget the UK is one of the only countries in the world never to go and liquidate the ruling class, these people - these elites (former aristocrats, bred out of elite schools for hundreds of years into the highest offices of the land) - they’ve run this fucking island for 1,000 years. Tories are the most effective political machine in Europe, sadly they’re also authoritarian thieving scumbags.
Anyone that seriously tries to change the system ends up: Dead (Dr David Kelly), Professionally Discredited (Dr David Nutt), Character Assassinated (Corbyn), or some other twisted fate shit out of the mechanics of this facist-slide shithole.
Feel like complete shit might as well invite the Normans back.
But yeah British public get more distracted by drivel about Truss’ stupid comments, like Johnson’s, like Trumps - it’s just sinister distraction politics.
The majority haven’t voted for the conservatives for a very long time
But they did get a majority in Parliament even after the shit they caused.
They did get a majority in the Brexit referendum to leave the EU.
Is the UK a democracy?
Yes, OK, well, that means the people are responsible for what happens to it.
The American public is responsible for Trump's presidency. The Dutch public is responsible for Mark Rutte's reelection and position.
I don't like Mark Rutte. I hate him. But you know what I won't do? Pretend the fault doesn't lie with the people. I know it's the people that suck and keep making the same mistake. I can admit that. Why can't the Brits admit that?
The first step to solving a problem is recognizing there is one. Refusing to look in the mirror will only create the same problems again and again.
I mean what year is it?
Why are France and Britain still squabbling?
Because the UK refuses to own up to the consequences of the Brexit it chose itself.
Yet the UK only seem to have issues with France and none of the other 26 EU member states. Strange that.

None of Europe bar Belgium are as geographically close of you than us. If you were having a screaming match with Slovakia, then you would just be pissing around.
Elect a correct government next time, then we won't have to lose time on dumb issues.
You would have thought Macron would have learnt from the last one thousand years. France/England have a love hate relationship we love each other in a way but we'll never trust each other.
Britain will always have France's back but we are like siblings that squabble.

The trouble is we are still probably 5-10 years away from the point where one of the two main UK political parties dares to come out and says Brexit was a terrible idea and we should start to reverse it.
Because of that the candidates for Prime Minister can only come from a very small pool of people who are either too stupid to realise how terrible an idea Brexit was, or people who are willing to continue telling lies about it.
Macron is sugarcoating it, not just the PM, but the entire British media are very adversarial towards France and to a lesser extent the EU.
The political is the only thing that has real world effects though. Here in the west, the media always praises the food, culture, and history of China and Iran. Things aren't exactly going swimmingly in those relationships. Face it, as bad as the media is in most Western countries, it has nothing on the persecution complex/childish name calling/fear mongering of the British media. Rupert Murdoch fucked the U.K so bad
Tabloids don't make up most of the UK media you know, and the UK isn't the only country to have tabloids. You have the tabloids and broadsheet newspapers.
The line is blurred between tabloid and news way more in the U.K than most other western countries. It isn't the fault of the average British person, thank the Tories and Rupert, but it does have an impact on the discourse of the average Brit.
There's so much shit that can be traced back to Murdoch.
An entire generation's outlook on the EU has been moulded by stories of straight bananas and shopkeepers being forced to take away imperial signage and any other random thing.
And once someone has an opinion on something, it's nigh-on impossible to shake it. That's just how people are. We don't like to believe we were wrong, so we undergo truly impressive mental gymnastics to avoid admitting it.
Total is supplying Russian fighter jets with fuel. It’s hard to tell if France is an enemy to the west or not.
Truss is a fucking moron and will say anything to get elected, I want her as far away from prime minister as humanly possible she doesn’t give two shits about the country or the people she just wants her 5 minutes of fame.
France is definitely an ally and this is a ridiculous thing to even suggest. We’ve got far bigger problems than this.
Tell UK leadership to go fuck themselves, we don’t need them. They are a junior partner at best, if that. The irrelevance is deafening!
Truss is a fool, Boris is and was a fool, Macron to be honest isn't much better - but France is a key ally.
The quote here was about Macron the person not France.
She is an absolute spastic. I dont like either but honestly give me Sunak over this dweeb anyday of the week. Especially given the economic shitstorm were headed in to. At least Sunak will understand most of the associated terminology.
