I’m a Canadian who now lives in the U.S., but for part of my childhood I lived in New Zealand and visited Australia. In my experience there’s a strong similarity between how Canada and New Zealand view themselves in relation to their bigger neighbours.

With foreign relations, New Zealand is more similar to Canada. Geographically, Australia is more similar to Canada as both have populations living on the edges of their massive landmasses (along the coasts for Australia and along the southern border for Canada). Both have much more people living in the east than the west. Both are bound by three oceans. Australia and Canada are opposites in some regards. Australia is very warm and Canada very cold. Australians are rude while Canadians are nice.

As an Aussie who has moved to NZ, I can confirm that the cost of living is actually a lot higher here in NZ. Housing, food, fuel etc. are all upwards of 50% more here with similar wages being earnt

Speaking as a Kiwi-type ... I think here in NZ (1) the wages are substantially lower than in Oz & (2) the cost of living here is significantly higher ... so Oz has a clear double-advantage over us ... but we continue to passively put up with it in a way that most Aussies wouldn't.

Australia has much larger scale fires. I live in Auckland and the sky was completely orange/red for a day during the 2019 forest fires. The fires were over 2,200km away.

I lived,worked in Australia for 10 years, and I would say that Australia is definately the better country from an income,cost of living perspective, you can afford to have a good life in Australia on an average income, try that in NZ, most couples in NZ must BOTH be working fulltime just to survive

At least I know petrol and cars(includes motorbike) are cheaper in Aus than in NZ.
For tax rates, in NZ it is not too "summer-job friendly" since even if you earn $1 per year, you still have tax (while in Australia you pay $0 tax for income lower than $18200 a year, which is usually not reached by students who only works at summer)

It depends where in nz, smaller towns that arent to puplulayed are cheap, but as you get to more populated areas it can get quite expensive, but dam our petrol prices are insane.

btw, i have lived in both countries and their is an open boarder a free travel arrangement. I can say with out doubt New Zealand is more expensive to live and does not earn as much money so the standard of living is much higher in Australia.

Having spent a long while in both Australia and NZ, I'd have to say NZ is a very nice place to holiday, Australia is a much nicer place to live. And as other people have commented, the cost of living is far worse in NZ.
