Both are correct. The Gulf War resulted in the US joining with thirty something other nations in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Syria - went in to fight against ISIS since the Russians were only concerned with supporting their Syrian dictator puppet and weren’t doing anything. Vietnam - response to the invasion of South Vietnam by North Vietnam. Korea - response to North Korea’s invasion of South Korea. WWII was WWII, Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack on the US, and a few days later, Germany and Italy declaring was on the US.
So, it depends on how you are looking at it - the entire history of the US, or the contemporary history of the US.
