Japan as a country is clean, orderly and safe because Japanese society is ULTRA-RIGID. Discipline is a double-edged sword, on a personal as well as social level.
You are right. I've been here since 1997, naively waiting for things to improve. They haven't. In many ways, they're even worse today. The biggest mistake of my life was to live here. I've basically gotta tough it out till retirement and then hope I will have enough of a pension to live in a nicer country.
@Thad tuiol What country is nicer than Japan? Crime is still low; things are still clean, correct?
@Thad tuiol Every country is more or less the same.
@Venkatesh G Absolute nonsense. Yeah, Somalia is the same as Japan. What a joke.
@DHD-RSW I think Netherland is a good country.
@DHD-RSW Any of the nordic countries
@Laidbackjames1 Yeah. I also heard that school bullying in Japan is rampant causing numerous suicides etc. but it almost never gets into the news.
My grandfather came to live with us in the US for 6 months and basically got depressed because of how orderly everything was (compared to india) and basically how society was very rigid and not fun to live in. Of course we as Americans think that america is very open and not rigid but to someone used to living in india it was unbearable. This is kinda the same thing we would experience as Americans if we went to Japan
The Americans bullied the Japanese in the Plaza Accords and forced the value of the yen to increase, collapsing the Japanese economy and a generation of Japanese to suffer
It was another economic nuclear bomb the US dropped on Japan.

Filipinos are learning from Japan in the wrong way. The sudden popularity of authoritarianism is due to them thinking if they were as disciplined as the Japanese or Singaporeans, we would become as rich as them.
I admire the Japanese. And the Japanese girls are very attractive. You will not see an obese person in Japan, they know how to take care of themselves.
@Jeroen Jansen Their suicide rate is crazy, many people there are pretty unhappy. Not saying it's a bad country, because I admire actually also a lot about them. But let's also be realistic, they're very far from being perfect. And they don't care about each other at all lmao Plus obesity in Japan is lower mostly due to environmental factors. It's true japanese people have a healthier lifestyle, but it's because of cultural habbids. Vegetables, fish or soybean products in their food is pretty common, plus food in general there is more expensive.
USA has even a slightly higher suicide rate than Japan and there are countries with almost double the suicide rate that of Japan
I'd rather live in Tokyo than New York.
"If I were a young Japanese and I could speak English, I would probably choose to emigrate." Said the late Lee Kuan Yew in 2013.
Why not stay in Japan, get a job and marry a Japanese girl????
Japan is a great country to visit but not to live
Especially for women.
Sad thing is that literally applies to most of the world except for maybe west EU and New Zealand though.
One thing that doesn't seem to get talked about - the pressure put on students. I have a student who wakes up at 6am goes to school, stays at school until 6:30pm to finish all of his homework. Then goes to a juku school until 8:30pm and then - goes to baseball practice until 11pm. He also has piano lessons at some point.
... He's 12 years old.

Hope he makes it to 13!
My mom lived a very similar life when she was younger, so I'm sad to see how that hasn't changed.
I'm a PhD living in Japan right now. Let's just say they do an incredible job with PR. Living here is not great, in many instances they're backwards (they still use fax machines, for example), and almost every Japanese worker I've spoken with wants to move out, work for a North American company. Unless you're a delusional weeb or masochist, you are not prefer living in Japan.. Btw if you're coming as a tourist, it's nice.
I have always wanted to see Japan . Now I am not sure
Fax is secure that's why.

If you’re a foreign Man who is an introvert with money. You will LOVE Japan. From the outside, everything seems “perfect”. Everyone polite, things are super clean. So much beauty, ect.. but I’ve been here for 15 years. Even as an Introvert, I’m getting a little tired of Japan. Everything is the “Same” and cookie cutter. You notice how women have it very badly. You notice how people are are not naturally introverts are “forced” into being one. You notice the sadness behind the smiles.
I have lived in Japan since 1997, from the UK. It sucks here in many ways. Earthquakes, typhoons, ugly as hell cities, boring, work-obsessed people, insanely crowded trains, people with zero personal interests or hobbies outside work, sexual perversion and a repressed society. The society is ethnocentric and has a weird superiority/inferiority complex about foreign countries, especially China and the West. The best things are the low crime rates and some of the lovely pretty girls you meet in your day to day life here (although even opportinities for that have declined since Covid).

Yeah as an European I always wondered where the western myth about the great quality of life in Japan came from. To me, it always seemed a pretty dystopian society. Don’t worry though, things are going to shit in Europe too, especially in the southern states. I’m Italian and Italy is basically a failed state, the cost of living went up 20-25% in the last 3yrs, the salaries are the same they were since the introduction of the Euro and even if you’re a relatively young person with a degree, finding a decent job is basically impossible.
Are you joking? Japan is the most beautiful country
The reason why Japan has a lot of hikikomori is simply because a lot of Japanese parents allow their children to live with them even when they're adults. South Korea and Italy have a lot of hikikomori for the same reason. Hikikomori in these three countries are just the kinds of people who would be homeless in countries like the US, where parents are less likely to allow their children to live with them. In other words, Japan's hikikomori problem is virtually no different from many other countries' homelessness problems. They're both unemployment problems. However, I'd say there being a lot of hikikomi in a country is better than there being a lot of homeless people. Hikikomori are at least mentally healthier and less likely to commit crimes than homeless people.
