In order to be a superpower, you need to have a vast quantity of resources you can upon in case of a war. Japan may be rich, but it is still dependent on stuff like oil from the Middle East and grain from America. If Japan was cut off from these things the economy would collapse very quickly.

Japan has always relied on other countries for oil.
@Jason Dyrkacz and that's why it couldn't become a superpower, and that's also why they invaded the Dutch East Indies in WWII

Japan's real power is not resousrces, they're not rich in those. Their richness is really the Japanese people 日本人. Look at Argentina for example they have the resources yet Japan has more economic might than Argentina.
That was why they had to conquer Korea and China
And that's why Russia IS a superpower. They're more or less self-sufficient in regards to their natural resources and food.
@Fiero88mph2018 their economic influence is non existent. A superpower also needs to have a extremely influential economy. Also Brazil and Argentina could be argued to be resource rich and self sufficient yet they aren't superpowers. (Brazil and Argentina can produce their own food and export alot too)
Japan has bamboo which is a significantly better material than wood. But that's about all they have unfortunately.
That's why Japan rampaged through East (multiple times) and Southeast Asia, it wanted those resources and land.
@nat21 regardo I agree with this. Japan relies supply of raw resources from other countries. But it is its people and culture that made it progressive in just a matter of decades, putting the collective good first.
I'm Japanese and tbh, the empire was brutal and I'm glad that Japan is now more peaceful. I do hope Japan will prosper, along with its fellow Asian nations.
Considering it has the 3rd largest GDP, its influence in western culture from ninjas to anime, and the fact that every western household owns a product made by a Japanese company (i.e. Honda, Sony, Toshiba, Yamaha, Nintendo, etc.), Japan has done pretty well for itself for the past 70 years. WWII Japan could never have dreamed of having this much world influence.
WW2 Japan really was just a major power equals with the British Commonwealth, the USA, Germany and the Soviets. Even then Japan was on the low end of major powers despite their major gains.
It was 80's-90's Japan that really had the chance, on being the world's biggest economy, overtaking the USA, which was considered as the global hegemon.
Surely Japan did dream of global influence during WWII. The difference is that modern Japan got it, WWII Japan didn't.
Japan's soft power on par with superpower country but now overshadowing by Korean products (Korean manhwa, Korean video games)
Japan's movie exports in 2019 is 8.65 times larger than South Korea's one.
4th soon….I’ll give it by 2025 India will surpass it
@TNT_PKK India? Surpass Japan? It’ll have to surpass Germany first!
@Gabriel Tinoco Believe or not, music industry of Japan is bigger than South Korea tho. It is the 2nd highest, only behind US. It is not as worldwide popular as K-Pop but its sale is bigger. That's why you see many K-Pop bands try to approach Japanese market.
The basic conditions (ALL must be fulfilled) to become a superpower nation:
1. Having a large land mass that contain a lot of natural resources
2. Knowledge to processing those resources
3. Having a lot of population
4. Having nuclear bombs
Seeing those points, I guess Japan never qualified to enter the class of superpower league...
Point 4 is really important in the modern world, because if your country has huge natural resources but you don't have enough power to protect it, you may ended up like DR Congo (worst example) or your national policies will be dictate by the real superpower....
@Arif Nasfi yes but just having nukes doesn’t guarantee being world superpower, for example North Korea possesses Nukes but they don’t quite qualifies as world superpower don’t they?

@Golmar that's because they don't fulfill the first, second, or third criteria. you need ALL four of them to be a superpower. Having one is not enough
If they had the natural resouces of the middle east, they would've become a superpower.
How much is the minimum land for a superpower
The 1st one very important
@Shumaila Maqbool More than 1.5millions sq km...
5. Have a good navy
6. Be on good terms with most of the world
@Sith Lord 6 is completely wrong imo
So you are saying that a huge country with a vast population a big economy and a lot of natural resources is not a superpower only because they don't have a nuclear bomb?
Japan could develop nukes in a week
I Do see Japan as a superpower i mean it has the worlds 3rd largest economy Beating every eu country
It's a regional power at best.

China meets all 4 factors
@Andi A Indeed, so do America, India and Russia...
The British empire never had #4, and was unquestionably the world's first superpower.
The most important to be a superpower is to have at least 2 million army, well equipped, well trained and willing to risk their lives for their country without question or hesitation.
in the 90s, it was predicted that the US and Japan would have a Pacific War rematch in the 2020s
no Japan took hard lessons in WW 2 they won't start new war against USA
The short answer is population.
Their population went from 40 million in 1900, to 70 million in 1937. 30 million in almost 40 years, they expanded massively.
Their population went from 80 million in 1948, to 120 million in 1980. 40 million in almost 30 years, they were a global power.
Their population went from 124 million in 1990, to 123 million now. -1 million in 30 years, they've stagnated for 30 years.
Actually ,I want to correct some thing here :
They had a population of 43.85 Million in 1900 ,70.36 Million in 1937 (+26.51 Million in 37 years)
Had a population of 79.5 Million in 1948 ,116.6 Million in 1980 (+37.1 Million in 32 years)
Had a population of 123.41 Million in 1990 ,to 128.08 Million in 2008 ,to 125.2 Million now . (+4.67 Million in 18 years ,--2.88 Million in 14 years)
the only reason Japan and others (like Germany) will never reach full potential is simply because the US doesn't want it to happen.
how can Japan be a superpower if America controlled their military strength
USA will not allow it to be a superpower, it will not have chance
Japan cannot be super power, but I hope it will continue to grow steadily in the future.
Grow? Have you looked at their demographics? They'll be lucky if they don't have an economic collapse within the century.
Japan stopped to grow in the 90s
“Super power”. USSR was a super power but much poorer than Japan. Japan had little interest In being a military or geopolitical leader so that’s why it didn’t become a super power
