What impact will 40°C heat have on the UK? - BBC News

From Sydney, Australia, where 40 is rare, but happens from time to time: my advice is 1) stay hydrated; 2) don't stay outside for too long; 3) maybe go to the mall and/or pub and just sit, play cards and drink; 4) make sure the elderly and children are WELL cared for.
It's two days of extreme heat also in the Netherlands.
Do not drink alcohol if it is gonna be 40 that is just stupid
Avoid or limit your consumption of alcoholic and sugary beverages. Both act as dehydrators in extremely hot weather. I once had a neighbor who died from dehydration because they only drank sugary and alcoholic beverages during 100+ weather.
The impact of unusually high temperatures on people can be significant. People can experience heat stress. Symptoms of heat stress include dizziness, headache, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and increased body temperature. In extreme cases, heat stroke can occur, which is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by an extremely high body temperature and changes in mental status. While everyone is at risk for heat-related illness during periods of extreme heat, those with chronic medical conditions and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. It is important to stay hydrated during periods of extreme heat and to avoid spending extended periods of time outdoors if possible
Well said and I would like to add take care of your pets during this time as well. Also avoid or limit your consumption of alcoholic and sugary beverages. Both act as a dehydrator during extremely hot weather.
The elderly have lived thru lots of hot summers
Here in Central Texas we're currently on a streak of 17 consecutive days of triple digit temperatures and the total of 100-degree days now sits at 34 so far in 2022. With no relief in sight and the chance of things becoming much worse (114f-116f!!!) before the end of the month!
Try and stay cool, stay hydrated and find shade.
If you have a deep freezer, make as much ice as you can during the night.
When it gets hot the next day and you have no A/C, place the ice in a bucket and put that bucket into another bigger bucket to catch all the cool air.
Aim a fan towards the ice, and you have an air conditioner for about 4 hours.

Very smart...
If you have a deep freezer sleep inside it
In Western Australia where we get sometimes 3 weeks straight of 40-45 degree days i suggest you keep in shades as much as possible, cover your skin whereever the sun can touch and keep curtains closed. Here everywhere has aircon to not have one is unimaginable. BUY A DEHUMIDIFIER!! the humidity is what tortures you the most and opening windows for air isn't a great idea unless your house is an oven inside.

Where I live, in summer, the temperature easily goes till 45⁰c-48⁰c with 94% humidity. To avoid sun/heat stroke we eat/drink below..
- plenty of water
- watermelon, cucumber, sugar cane
- yogurt, juices
- regular consumption of onion helps too
Here in Portugal going 35's to 40 degrees Celsius is becoming a norm this year. Some tips we're doing here.
1: Go out in the early mornings to do your shopping/walk your dog etc.
2: Take a bottle of cool water with you to stay hydrated.
3: Stay away from sunny sidewalks and keep in shady areas.
4: Try not to take far walks, take an Uber or public transport if you're going far.
Hope those tips will help us all get through this scorching heat in Europe!
Extreme weather has become the norm across the world. In the States, we're experiencing extreme heat and drought across the Western states.

It's not so bad in your air conditioned buildings
Air conditioner use should be limited because it will create a vicious cycle, and natural means of cooling should be preferred.

It's 28c in the west Midlands atm, 34c is the hottest it will get according to the forecast
Just remember, don't use fans in temps over 42c as it will only kill you faster.
We’re used to it in Australia. Wear a big sun hat whenever outside. Swim in the nearest waterhole and stay in the shade if you can.
I was a bricklayers labourer for 2 years in Australia with this heat every day and worse when I was 19.
At least after Friday in most places its meant to drop to mid 20s

When you got a whole country that doesn't use a ton of AC, then yeah it's really dangerous!
I've lived in places way hotter than it is now and have never had air-con in a house and neither did any of my neighbours. I've visited plenty of people in the States, and no-one seems to be able to live without it.
@Pedro Conejo In Phoenix, we literally wouldn't be able to live without it as temps go above 110 degrees almost every year and hundreds die each year anyways even with so many air conditioned buildings
I have lived 8 years in the UK in total... And British houses are third-world quality. Even rather posh and expensive houses are dreadful. Completely unable to handle cold or heat. If its damp, and cold outside, its damp and cold inside.

40° is literally what many South East Asians endure every Summer
This heat is NOTHING compared to what's in store for us in the coming decades.
I’m so sorry for UK and Europe and everywhere it is so hot. Sending love from America. Many people here have no air conditioning also. Try to go to the library or similar place for the daytime hours.
I still don't understand what is the big deal ? I am living in a city where 47 c is called a normal summer day and nobody even talks about it.
Because here the UK is a temperate normally cool country that has never been at or above 40 degrees at any point in time, and in summer is usually in the low to 25’s.
Mate no country has a "normal" 47 degree temp. That is a high heat wherever you go. But I'm sure there is widespread air conditioning in your country and that the humidity is nowhere near as bad as the UK which is ridiculously high.
@92-GS-22 I have been living in Aswan Egypt for decades and 47C in summer is very normal in Aswan. And we didn't have an air conditioner as the majority of the people there when I was growing up.The good thing about Aswan's weather is that it's extremely dry and there's no humidity at all.
@Windows Sux well if you haven't experienced the humidity that the UK gets then you can't really compare. It isn't the heat that is the dangerous thing it is the sheer humidity.
It hasn't been this hot in Britain for A thousand years.
They should come to India yearly for heat surviving training. 40°C is normal
I was in London last week . Man was it very hot. Glad Im back in a little chilly village in Norway.
