I think we might have a tendency to anthropomorphize the “emotions” and psychology of animals often in an effort to empathize with them. Do they share our feelings of “boredom”?
My daughter often asks me if a given animal is “smart”, and I respond to her that every creature is incredibly smart in their own ways, which are very different from ours- in many ways that we don't understand.
Aquarium fish are in a position where their instinctual behavior is pretty oppressed because of captivity. Is this confusing to them too?
I've kept an aquarium for four years now and I"ve wondered the same thing. To this extent, I research and try to maintain my tank to mimic as much of their natural environment (wood, sand,gravel, different size rocks, varieties of different plants,etc.) with nooks and crevices- but the distortion and barrier of glass walls, filters, water quality…. Okay, so boredom:
Every week or two I move things around in the tank, add something new or take something out- in their natural environment they’ve never ‘stepped in the same river twice’, so I try to rotate their surroundings with the hope that this might help to mimic their ever changing environment in the natural world; for them to hopefully, maybe find some reprieve from the stasis of a tank environment. I also place pictures of aquatic environments on a panel of the tank and change them around occasionally too. Is this guilt or fish keeping?

I’m pretty sure they do. But as long as their needs are met, they can still love their lives. Even the best tank at an aquarium can’t compare with the majestic seas but they can live longer in a tank since there are no predators.
If you think about it, humans sorta live in a self imposed “tank”. The earth is 196 million square miles large yet most of us stay within a 20 mile radius for the majority of our lives. We wake up at the same time, eat more or less the same foods, drive the same car to our same job, and go back to our same home to do the same mundane activities, then we go to sleep, wake up, and do it all over again. But as long as our basic needs are met and we have company, we don’t really complain of boredom. Just think of that same concept on a more simplistic level with fish.
Maybe fish don’t really expect much more out of life since they were already bred and raised in a pet store tank before you purchased it. As long as they have food, a clean & safe environment, and other fish to keep them company, they should be alright. That’s just like humans. As long as we have food, shelter, security, and loved ones around, we’ll be just fine!
I usually stay within a 10 mile radius 99.99% of the time and I barely ever wonder what life is like on the other side of the Earth. So I would assume that a pet fish is not worried about missing out on the deep blue sea. They adapt to their environment and make the most out of their existence.

Another good point. Most aquarium fish are captive bred and don't know any other life. So if they are provided for well, they shouldn't get “bored” as they don't know what they're missing. Fish live in here and now. You require a sense of what you're potentially missing out on to get “bored" Though, it is helpful to change things up in the tank a bit every now and then. Adding in growing plants that change over time, adding dried leaves or driftwood pieces to forage in or hide under, switching out decor, etc. It's really cool to see their behaviour change based on their surroundings, and it seems to make them healthier and more resistant. I think rather than “bored", fish can be either stressed out or content and healthy, and thus either showing normal behaviour or abnormal behaviour in response to the stress or lack of stress. If that makes sense?

I own a young flowerhorn.
I truly believe that we have developed a relationship in a similar way to a dog or other similar pet. Granted it's largely based on food but so is a relationship with a dog.
From what I can tell he recognizes me specifically and swims frantically around the tank when I get home from work as if he's excited to see me. It is quite clear that he likes having someone else there with him and interacts when I am near the tank.
Like most flowerhorns I keep him alone in a tank for various reasons, mostly he would destroy any other fish I would house him with, maybe one day when he's moved to his forever tank.
From these interactions it seems clear to me that he can get bored and enjoys or needs interaction. He is right by my desk and I spend a good amount of time interacting so he won't get bored.
This level of cognitive abilities does not seem to be universal to fish. It is just my opinion from observation but chichlids seem to have a more inquisitive mind, likely from being predators.
In summary I would say, yes, some fish can indeed get bored.

My two goldfish, Linda and Bob, do this when they see me. They don't do it when they see other people though. I'm sure it's just because they connected me to their food source, but just the fact that they can do even that much is exciting to me. Animal behaviour is such an awesome thing to observe, analyze, and research.

Boredom is an emotion and you get on shaky ground when you start ascribing emotions to animals, especially ones so different from us. We are close enough to apes that we can often guess their emotional state, although we even can get that wrong with chimps. They see a smile as aggression, for example.
Fish have much simpler brains than we have and may not even have the hardware for emotions. That being said, it could be argued that it is cruel to keep a fish contrary to its social needs, if it has any. Many aquarium fish such as tetras, rasboras and Corydoras catfish are schooling fish. Their security comes from being part of a school. Not providing them with a school can make them behave abnormally. Other fish are solitary except at spawning time. Some will tolerate non-related species but don’t interact with them. They may be fine being alone their entire lives. Bettas are an example of this type of fish. If you put two Bettas together and they are not ready to spawn, one will likely kill the other in an aquarium. Cichlids, on the other hand can have complex social structures. Mbuna from Lake Malawi need to be crowded in an aquarium to defuse aggressive behavior. Other cichlids form bonded pairs and apparently not any other fish will do. Some individuals just don’t get along. Some people keep large cichlids as single specimens in aquaria and they frequently interact with their keeper.

The same could be said for a fish. It exists in a neutral state, awaiting stimuli. Take your Betta in its bowl, for example. When it is dark, he sleeps. When morning comes he awakens. If he is hungry he explores his surroundings picking on the biofilm that grows on every wet surface. When you add food, he eats. If he is healthy and the temperature is high enough he builds a bubble nest. If he sees a female Betta, he courts her. If she is receptive they spawn, if not he drives her away. If there is no stimulus, internal or external, he simply exists.

That you say dogs don't get bored, they just live in the moment, (as humans do for the most part) is bs, I video taped my two dogs when I left for work one morning after noticing how quiet & fearfull they were when I was about to leave, after seeing the tape after work I was horrified, all they did for 8 hrs from the moment I left to my return was to cry & running to the fro from the front windows to the door with every sound, hoping I'd return, they missed me so much, it upset me seeing how they suffered so, how could I put them through this 5 days a week? They didn't play with eachother while I was working, they were constantly waiting for my return, they didn't want food they wanted me, I fed them as I was about to leave but they both ran to the door as if to hopefully come with me, it was more than food, they didn’t eat the morning meal when I was working, but over the weekend they'd wolf it down just knowing I was there, these dogs & therefore all dog, cats & other animals know of time & they get bored, lonely, feel pain physically & mentally, they all fear death as any human does, they're not plants, even plants react to their surroundings & don't want to die, hence spines, poisens etc to avoid being consummed. that being said I think any animal, be it fish, amphibian, reptile.mammal or birds, they all want freedom, to do what nature intended, which wasn't to live in a glass bowl with fake plastic plants (if they're lucky), all life needs life to be as nature intended it for every species that's ever lived or ever will live!

Fish are simple creatures though. As long as their social needs are met, they have a varied diet, plenty of swimming space, and an enriched environment they are pretty content doing their fishy things- even in a tank. That being said, meeting the need of the species at hand is absolutely necessary. Before acquiring any species extensive research needs to be done. If you cannot provide the requirements for any pet thoroughly and consistently you shouldn't be getting said pet.

Pure bullshit. What you talk is not scientific. Solitary living of species is natural but living in a closed tank for rest of life isn't! And please observe a dog more carefully next time. They do have variable emotions sometimes more than a man. Be receptive and keen to nature don't make such statements without knowing the nature.

It’s a proven fact that most, more complex animals DO have complex emotions and feelings. It’s been proven for awhile now. Especially dogs and cats. It takes a delusional mindset to believe that dogs don’t have complex emotions and feelings.

It is not a proven fact that any animals other than humans have complex emotions and feelings. It is not provable because we cannot get into the mind of an animal. Even with higher primates with whom we can communicate with sign language, we don’t know that they have complex emotions. Given the similarity in brain morphology and physical characteristics, I believe it is likely that they have similar emotions to humans, but that is not proven.
We have sextively bred dogs and cats for hundreds of generations to respond to us the way that they do. It is quite likely that a person who thinks animals have and express emotions similar to humans is the delusional one.

Now I don’t think projecting emotions on to animals is a sign of mental illness. It is a natural function of our brains, just like seeing shapes, especially faces where there are none, such as the face on Mars, shapes in clouds, and the Virgin Mary in an oil spill.
The idea that animals have emotions cannot be tested by science because it is non-falsifiable. Since you cannot get into the mind of an animal, you can neither prove or disprove what it feels, if anything.
I think that it is likely that animals with brains similar to ours may have emotions, but that does not prove it. It is mentally rewarding to us to act as though it is true. But as brains are less and less like ours, I think it is less and less likely that they function in the same manner.
By the way, I do treat my own dog as if it has emotions even if I know many of his behaviors are likely the result of conditioning.

With all due respect don't comment on something you have little information on. Read the newest studies published on fish. They feel pain, they get depressed and even bored. You said one shouldn't describe human emotion to animals. Yet you fail to realize that we too are animals. But it's a common trait of humans to thing they are so special, so I can not blame you for your ignorance.

Of course we are animals. More specifically we are chordates, we are mammals, we are primates and we are apes. Our closest relatives are chimpanzees. So what if we are animals? Sponges are animals and not only do they not have brains, they don’t even have nerve cells.
Do YOU know and understand the differences mammalian and fish brains? Fish don’t even have the brain parts understand pain or feel emotion.

One of the first rules of studying animal behavior is not to project human emotions onto animals. That would be making assumptions without any facts to back up those assumptions. Can you get into an animal’s head and experience the world through its senses? Just exactly how do suggest one diagnoses depression in a fish?
I don’t care if you feel fish have emotions. It is just insulting to say I have little information on fish or am ignorant that humans are animals. Just because we have emotions that doesn’t say anything about any other organism without evidence. We know that even people of different cultures react differently to the same situation so how can you assume anything about animals?

Dogs absolutely get bored, especially if you have a high energy breed. They get destructive or neurotic when not properly stimulated or exercised. Same with basically any mammal. Though I do agree that the water gets a little murky when you ascribe mammalian traits/emotions to fish. Pun intended.
