As an Irish person with a Masters degree in Economics, let me have my opinions:
1 Ireland is indeed a rich country, and far, far better off than it was 30 years ago. But GDP does flatter this artificially by at least 20%. However even if we take 20% off Irish GDP, Ireland would still be around the Top 10 richest countries in the World. Minimum and median wages are at the upper end among developed economies, although costs are high especially in Dublin.
In conclusion, the huge increase in Irish incomes over the last 30 years has been remarkable, and a large wave of wealth will follow that. I see bright future over the next 20 years.
The cost of living in Dublin is far too high for the average earner specially when it comes to housing.
If you lived in rural Ireland you wouldn’t see a very bright future ahead
What would happen if the EU mandated Ireland to increase their Corporation Tax rate? I suspect the Corporations would take flight and resettle in a lower tax country. Hopefully the UK will drop its Corporation Tax to Ireland’s current level. Ireland’s GDP would fall dramatically
@michaeli160954 no matter what happens jobs still aren’t coming near rural Ireland and important services are being lost all the time and won’t be coming back
@Aaron Quigley according to Revenue statistics about 40% of all our corporation tax take is paid by just 10 companies - presumably multinationals. That is seen as a risk factor because if even one of them left it would have a huge impact on us. As it is Novartis is reducing its operation in Ringaskiddy. I don't know if it was one of the 10.
事实上诺华(瑞士制药公司)正在减少自己在Ringaskiddy(是爱尔兰科克郡的一个村庄)的业务。
@Ed Conway I'm hoping the work from home revolution will help to reverse this trend!
Do you think that Ireland is better of in the EU than out of it? And do you think that Schotland should also seek independence?

Honestly the cost of housing isn't even that expensive if you look around the country. Its just people being stubborn and only looking for houses in Dublin
@Precision 21 Because Ireland is basically all Dublin, everything is there.
Sadly my wallet doesn't agree with you.
But Irish Income has completely stagnated in the last 30 years compared to cost of living.
I would disagree that the wealth just trickles down, it just trickles down to employees of those companies, shareholders and some others. If it did really trickle down there would be a better health service, better road infrastructure and lower VAT and such.
How become a rich country: become a tax paradise
My wallet doesn't seem to know that we are one of the richest countries in the world
Many of the citizens are not wealthy and will never ever feel the benefit of the growing economy.
being in a rich country mostly means that everything around you is getting expensive.
@Diarmaid O'Riordan I grew up in France and moved to Ireland in 2006 (I'm 24 now), lived in Madrid too and quality of life in Ireland is noticeably better
Well almost everything in this country is affordable, we have good health care and you should be grateful that you don't live in america.
@Joseph Haha trust me I am VERY grateful to not be living in the US, but our healthcare has very long waiting times, our public transport is expensive and the HOUSING
UK is fifth-richest country in the world 50% of money is held by 1% of population. .. not fair - dutch quite rich but money is quite well shared out and norway too.. why no idea ..
If you're going to talk about Ireland's (basically Dublin's) economy, you have to mention the housing crisis -- Dublin has the most expensive housing in the eurozone.
If you've lived in Dublin you'll also know that the "research and development" jobs that tech companies bring often go to highly educated Americans or Europeans. Ireland's tiny population doesn't produce that many tech developers.
Finally, you mustn't overlook the fact that so much of Dublin's workforce is made up of Brazilians on student visas living and working in terrible conditions, while their meagre earnings are milked by compulsory English language courses.
What about the brain drain though? Last time I heard students were going abroad because of a lack of opportunities? Maybe Ireland has a decent GDP but is it going towards anything productive and constructive?
There is a massive issue with housing prices in Dublin.
You either sell your life to a tech company or become homeless here.
Dublin is a two hour drive form Belfast. Yet, house prices are 450% higher in Dublin than Belfast.
ireland 1980: $24B
ireland 2019: $398B
Weird, I always thought Ireland was big in the automotive industry. After all, the Irish do have a ton of experience with car engines.
