They were just surprised to see a non-Chinese in the middle of nowhere. They were even more surprised when you told them you live there. They just don''t know how to respond.

I can relate on a small level. Even though we live in Chengdu (Tianfu new district by nanhu park) if I don''t leave my neighborhood I can go months without seeing another foreigner. <3
