Of the fraction of so-called “homeless” people living that way because they prefer it over “the grind” of working-to-stay-alive, they choose this life mainly because the government doesn’t do enough, or even makes it painstakingly hard, to manage poverty. Of people who claim benefits, the organizations issuing benefits make people jump through a bureaucratic obstacle-course… half the time forcing people to fudge the system in order to keep their sanity (catch-22s, and such). Half the benefits workers I’ve met, if not all of them, have at one point in time or another actively participated in this “fudging” just because of the idiocy of the policies. Their jobs, and what they signed on for, is to help people, these social workers, not to push people away by following the rules to a T.

I am one of those types. The rent prices in America are bullshit. The area I live isn’t particular expensive, it’s a somewhat quiet college hub town. Prices of rent here are equivalent to the most expensive places in Europe, such as Nice, France. That’s right, I could live in Nice, France for the amount I pay to live in a mediocre town in America.

You are correct. I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and for what you pay for a one bedroom apt in LA, I could get a 2 bedroom house and half an acre of lawn. Yet, here I remain, in LA. Why? Not my experience at all. I have been interviewing people living rough in Jacksonville for the last 20 years. Of the 150 or so people I have met the breakdown in reason for living rough are as follows
70% are addicted to drugs and or alcohol and are unwilling or incapable of functioning in a manner that would allow employment. They have burned all their social bridges and have been kicked out of shelters because they cannot stay sober.
20% are mentally ill and either are not taking medication or have not been diagnosed and as such are not stable enough to hold a job or meet the requirements of a shelter.
8% are just doing there thing.
The remainder2% are people not in any of the first three groups. In fact, I have met a grand total of one person in this time that falls into this group. He was a handyman who was stiffed on a months wages by a customer. He lived on the streets for 20 days while he made up his loss. So 2% in my experience in Jacksonville, FL is generous. T is a myth to think most people living rough are mentally healthy people who are just down on their luck.

As an American who has spent my ENTIRE life in abject poverty I just want to laugh my ass off at the idea that the government is taking care of us. In all seriousness, there ARE government welfare programs but they leave much to be desired and they often get their funding cut. An awful lot of Americans get their panties all up in a bunch whenever they find out you're on any given welfare program (from food stamps to disability benefits) ESPECIALLY if they so much as suspect you don't “deserve” them.
What's not to like about being homeless? There's loads of perverts around who would love nothing more than to degrade and humiliate you. Depending on where exactly you live and what time of the year it is, you could face freezing to death or dying of heat stroke. Wouldn't you KILL to have the opportunity to live like this?

I’d say it’s more like 7 or 8%. I just made that up, but I do think it’s the exception, not the rule. Government housing, has a very long waiting list where I live, years. A welfare check and food stamps is not enough money to prevent homelessness. It’s barely enough to cover food and bus fare. The government does not take care of all poor people. We have a social safety net that helps, but it’s not enough to keep people off the streets, not even close. I’m no expert but I’ve volunteered at a homeless shelter. I got the impression that most of the homeless had mental issues, or social issues, probably couldn’t get through a job interview with any success. We provided showers, clean clothes, an address, a phone number, all a person needs to get it together and job hunt, but it’s not enough for many. Although some take full advantage and do all they can to get back to taking care of themselves. Even if someone prefers this lifestyle, because competing in the economy is too overwhelming, or they’re just not capable, I think they’d still like a warm, safe place to sleep at night and our society has not stepped up. It’s miserable to live on the street. A shelter is not a secure home 365 days a year. At most, we’re able to keep people from freezing to death, and sometimes we fail at that.

People find themselves on the street for millions of reasons. Our Vets come home from war and can’t get a job. People get fired from a job and can’t find a new one. Companies send work to Mexico, etc. and put thousands out on the street because they can’t make mortgage payment. The government closed all mental facilities and orphanages, so hundreds ended up on the street. Girls and boys are sexually abused in their home, and they run away with no money and end up on the street or working for a pimp. The gov’t should be taking care of the homeless rather than sending millions/billions to overseas countries. Why would we give Ireland money? I don’t know, but I read that we did.

Hi. I have a couple of questions about your friend who is making the assumption that 70 to 80% of us homeless are living this way because we all apparently like it.
First question: Does your friend understand the fact that if he can't afford to pay his rent that his landlord probably won't like it too much, evict your friend so that someone who is able to pay rent can move in?
Second: Is your friend aware of the fact that there are many people living in abusive situations, they don't want to continue being in their situation and often move away from their abuser regardless if it means being homeless?
Third: Has your friend read anything aside from fiction (sci-Fi, fantasy?), meaning is your friend completely oblivious to what has happened in the history of a country like the United States. Things like the great depression happened in 1929, and the great recession in 2008.
It is actually humerous to think that homelessness happens to people with chemical dependence issues. Or to people suffering from some mental illness issues. The fact of the matter is that if you are spending above 30% of your income on rent alone. You have a good chance of becoming homeless yourselves. When that occurs. You to can be on the receiving end of all of the negative opinions concerning what causes homelessness.
Hmmm. I wonder what has happened to people's jobs since the Pandemic became an issue. I sincerely apologize to those of you who are going to end up being homeless because of the Coronavirus.
However, to those of you who are still of the opinion that being crazy, or being a drunk etc.. Are the root cause of experiencing homelessness.

Not sure how you would measure such a thing. People “choosing to be homeless” certainly is a real phenomenon, but is extremely unlikely to be 70–80% of all homeless people. Mental health problems, severe substance addiction/abuse problems, and abusive domestic situations (or all of the above) are common causes of homelessness. Dropping out of society by choice happens but is lower down on the list. And those that do “choose it” are often already suffering from one of the conditions above. If your options are stay in your home where you are sexually abused or live on the street, it's not really a choice. It's like deciding between being shot to death or being stabbed to death. Just because you pick one or the other doesn't mean you want it to happpen.
While true that the government and various private institutions and charities do provide a great many services and resources for the poor, there are limits to what they can provide, and these are often regional so in some geographic areas they can be completely overrun. These entities also typically require a certain level of cooperation and engagement that is very simple to manage for the kinds of people who don't actually need these services but can be very difficult for someone who already fell through the cracks in society, often precisely because they struggle with these sorts of things: staying sober, filling out paperwork, dealing with authority figures, problem solving, doing research, providing documentation, keeping track of information, showing up at specific places at specific times, getting along with others, following rules, etc.
The middle and upper classes are primarily the ones designing, funding, and operating these systems. They don't intentionally make them hard to access, but what seems like a simple and obvious requirement to them such as “we aren't going to help you if you're doing illegal drugs” can be a real problem for someone who is already physically addicted to illegal drugs. So there is lots of assistance, but it's scope can be somewhat limited.

Not true. I’m a retired gasman and have been door to door all day for over 33years. And have seen thousands of section 8ers (government pays rent) with multiple kids with different dads. That are probably 3rd generation well fair. Living in places as good and better than me. Makes me feel great struggling all day every day, year after year and am paycheck to paycheck. True not everyone who is homeless is poor, but most are. I can't think of any time a homeless person expressed they liked it, but preferring it to some other bad situation, yeah. My dad is currently homeless. He works as an athletic trainer. He walks around well groomed and clothed. Looking at him or talking with him, he doesn't seem homeless at all. He does always carry around big backpacks with his belongings (being an athlete, he claims he's using it to workout). I believe he normally sleeps on busses, trains, movie theaters or parks whenever he has down time. We moved out our home and he just never got back into a house. Probably stayed in his car, but he let that go too. He's a very interesting case to me, probably in the category of stable means and mental condition but just more comfortable with not having to pay for so much stuff. Anyway, not necessarily poor, he doesn't rely on government aid.

The work might be really hard or stressful but if you want to live indoors you do what you need to do. Long term you need to gain job skills, you can’t plan to live on one part time minimum wage job and not even have an emergency fund and have it work out. Spending on alcohol, tobacco, drugs or other waste of money makes it harder to stay indoors.

To be homeless not only means you have no money to pay rent but you have no family that will take you in either because they are also poor or you are annoying. At best goverment try to keep people from freezing to death in cold climates and shelter to families with children.
