Short answer, they're ignorant. They're completely ignorant of the past, ignorant of the business of entertainment, and ignorant of or angry about the reality of the world we live in today.
I was born in the 80's and I'm not so young that I don't recall a time when 90% of all media was centered around white people. The vast majority of the media I consumed in my youth was marketed toward and primarily represented white lives with only a few exceptions that were made to specifically reach an audience that was not white. With American demographics shifting and an entertainment industry that is global rather than national companies have intentionally moved away from catering to white audiences in an attempt to represent as many people as possible. This is a purely logical business decision. Films and shows are now shown in countries all over the world, it would be foolish to maintain the attitude of the past and have a 90% straight white cast today.
Why does diversity bother people? Why do they think it's unfair?
In my experience, the people that are complaining the most are people that had no problem with media almost exclusively representing them until just recently. To anyone that has a problem seeing diversity in media now you have to wonder why they believe media should only cater to them or that they should be the default audience. There's no logical reason television and film have to primarily represent one group of people, so why is any movement into non white representation considered a negative? It is not as if there is no longer any white representation, so what is really the issue? The people I have encountered complaining about diversity are in essence complaining that they are no longer the primary audience. They are treating diversity as if it is a personal loss to them. This attitude is frankly ridiculous. White audiences have been catered to and represented in all forms of American media since the inception of American media. To be upset about minorities being represented shows a profound arrogance and false sense of ownership over the entertainment industry.
Only an individual who has grown accustomed to and believes they are owed primary consideration would consider diversity unfair. There is nothing unfair about film and television being more diverse and considerate of other people who aren't you. What I'll frequently hear is the claim that diversity is “forced” while they claim that “organic diversity” is alright. This is actually a bullshit argument that allows anyone to claim any diversity is “forced” and therefore “bad” because “forced” is entirely subjective. First of all, what exactly makes “forced diversity” bad anyway? How is intentionally casting minorities a bad thing? Recognizing that Hollywood to this day thinks of white people as the default and correcting that thinking is not a bad thing unless you're a bigot.
The obxtive fact is there is no group of people that are owed primary representation regardless of population numbers nor is there any reason why diversity shouldn't be encouraged considering the global reality of entertainment. There simply is no valid argument against increased diversity in media and virtually all arguments are based on personal feelings and not facts. The vast majority of diversity in media are deliberate decisions made to reach a broader number of people whether you personally feel it's “forced” or not. Diversity isn't going to “ruin” anything and isn't going to hurt a film or movie. Sometimes a minority is cast because they're the best choice, the idea that all roles (yes this includes adaptations of fictional white characters) should be considered a white role by default is disgusting. The fact is if a character isn't defined by their race, sex, sexuality, nationality, etc. it doesn't matter if they're changed. The majority of people complaining are simply so accustomed to the privilege of being historically catered to that they feel threatened at the slightest indication that they might lose that privilege, which actually doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon.

I, for instance, am bothered by the forced diversity that feels like television is trying to “train” you (like a dog, I mean), force it in your head that diversity is normal.
I have nothing against people of any color, but when you only see interracial couples in every commercial, like there’s no white woman in UK still dating a white guy, or films in the past (victorian period) where London looks literally more diverse than today…. You kind of get the idea that they’re trying to push something down your throat, like it or not.
I don’t have problems with skin color, but I do have problems with some d*******s in a marketing company or film studio trying to “educate” me. Same like I had a problem with Gilette and stopped using their products after a specific commercial.

People don't have issues with diversity in TV, they have a problem when main established lore and characters are replaced for the sake of diversity. They hate when diversity is used as a weapon and minorities preach to people who otherwise don't have any real problems with them.
If you get called evil due to how you were born which is out of your control then yes you would be opposed to diversity as well. People are virtue signaling using minorities as a tool while simultaneously thinking so low of them that they become the very racist they claim to fight.
This woke crap has infected all forms or media and government. Anything it touches turns to crap and does poorly with the core audience that got that media to the status it has.
In my opinion this type of thinking combined with everyone trying to make everything racist and sexist signals the fall of a civilization.

Diversity? Or a wildly unrealistic ratio of various races and/or sexual preferences?
For example — Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII’s wives, mother of Elizabeth I was a white, European woman. This is a historical fact, and hast to be respected. If this was a work of fiction, other rules apply. But when a show is trying to pass itself as accurate for time and place, and then has wildly inappropriate actors, all credibility is lost, and for many viewers they feel that an agenda is being shoved down their throats, or that they are considered to be too stupid to realize what is wrong.

So I like Netflix, I like Mindy Kaling. She has a show called Never Have I Ever which takes place in southern California.
Main character is a girl with Indian immigrant parents - which is fine.

But the only white, anglo people are weirdos and disgusting. So the two love interests are a biracial boy and a jewish boy (ethnic minority). The only anglo people are obese or incredibly stupid.

I can't speak for others, but for me ,my issue isnt diversity in and of itself. But rather more black washing things that have zero reason to be black washed other than for diversity.
Perfect example:
Wheel of Time series ,the author even made a dream cast to play the roles of each character as he envisioned them in relation to the story he was telling…not a single one of them were black…racist? Nope ,it's just that the characters were other races ,primarily white ,because that's what this world was.its been a bit since I read the series, but I do seem to recall at one point the main characters see several black people and its clearly stated they had never seen people like these before. Clearly making it a plot line as for why they were seeing them at that point(pretty certain they were part of the lost ancestors or somesuch,some such, I said it's been a while since I read them)
And yet which ever studio us making it either Netflix or Hulu I can't remember off the top of my head ,has cast 2 separate black people last I heard to play 2 if the main characters for diversity .which is pointless imo.
Diversity just for diversity is idiotic. If the story calls for a black actor then make it a black actor, if it calls for a white actor then make them white.movies and TV shows are about entertainment they tell a story and if that story is about a group of long forgotten Irish men who for what ever reason was stuck in time who suddenly are in the modern world I would expect to see white people nit a bunch of mixed races just for diversity sake.

It’s a catastrophe of biblical proportions to racists, sexists, homophobes, and xenophobes.
To people used to privilege, equality feels like oppression.
People who firmly believe they and their group matter more than everyone else are perching on a very insecure foundation. It doesn’t take much — a person of color or a women in a role they think “belongs” to a white male, or just seeing a lot of gay people or black or brown people — to push them over the edge.

People are generally more drawn to the familiar and what they know. It also does not help the case for diversity television, when the so-called “diversity” is forced and clearly done for agenda driven purposes, rather that as merely an interesting aspect of the characters and/or story.
I for one, would love to see more programming (especially sitcoms) where a truly diverse ensemble of characters interact naturally with each other without feeling the need to mention race, gender, sexual orientation… etc. every five seconds of every episode.
You want an openly gay, or transgendered character? Fine. But you don't have to present them in such away that makes me feel like you are demanding a parade for being so “woke” and I am the worst kind of bigot because I can't relate to them. Show them as the normal human beings they generally are, and help people to see that this one aspect is not all there is to them.
You want a show about a minority family? That's wonderful. Show them dealing with the entire real world, not just the hot button issues we all hear about them dealing with in the news and on every other cookie-cutter show about minorities. When interacting with whites, have a greater range than southern redneck bigot, clueless butt of the joke outsiders, or idiotic insignificant token background friend.
I find it ironic that the only real places in media where diversity truly exists are in cop dramas and science fiction, though there is a growing movement to end it by over diversifying in sci-fi (Dr. Who and the recent changes in the Marvel Universe to give examples).
Truly diverse media should reflect real life (even within fiction) to be both inclusive and entertaining. When it's done just to be politically correct, or to “represent” a certain group or faction, it comes off as preachy, boring and alienating.

我发现具有讽刺意味的是，媒体中真正存在多样性的地方只有警匪剧和科幻小说，尽管有一个越来越大的运动，通过科幻的过度多样化来结束这种多样性（《神秘博士》和最近漫威宇宙的变化就是例子）。

Why does diversity in television bother people? Why do they think it's unfair?
Well, I don’t know why diversity in TV bothers people or makes them think it is unfair.
I could. I just have to survey a certain population and analyze the results. But I can’t do this since I don’t have the budget and the interest.
Anyway, I can make educated guesses.
Some of them are obvious, like being racists, classists, homophobes or whatever another bigoted collective is out there.
Other, less obvious, is cultural inertia.
For instance, I was born in 1965 in Argentina. Until not long ago homosexuals and trans people were the butts of the joke on TV, so it is not strange that people of my age feel a little bit off when gay or trans people are now portrayed as normal people. I am, sort of, even when I am a very open-minded tolerant person. I don’t think that it is unfair, I don’t feel really bothered or outraged by the person being trans or gay, what bothers me is my primal gut reaction of feeling that something is not right. Of course, this gut reaction just lasts a microinstant before my rational brain takes over, but in other people this gut reaction last longer.
If you grew in a culture where diversity was not normal you have a cultural shock, even if you are now an adherent of the new cultural standards.
Also, there might be people who are bothered for artistic reasons.
I don’t feel “comfortable” as a movie/TV viewer if diversity in a cast is not done well or it is feels forced or if —in the case of adaptations— conspires against the original source material.
I will exemplify with USA/UK shows since they are internationally known thanks to cultural imperialism.
“Master of None” does diversity right and even deals with “woke” issues correctly. It is not forced because it feels real.
“We are Lady Parts” doesn’t do diversity since it is completely focused on the London Muslim community but the “alien” feeling of watching a show about another culture is soon forgotten since it is done right and soon you are watching a silly comedy about an all-girl punk band and its neurotic narrator/protagonist guitar player.
“Batwoman”, on the other hand, does diversity wrong. You are constantly reminded of the main character being lesbian and, in S2, being black. Not to mention that the fact that a large portion of the main cast being also lesbian and/or black is brought to the front. So, what would have been a great idea —a black lesbian superhero— becomes a boring propaganda show about a unidimensional character.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” does diversity oddly. Having lived in a fascist dictatorship and knowing USA’s racism I feel odd that black people are tolerated in Gilead, not to mention that some of them are handmaids or “adopted” children. The show is not bad —OK, S3 sucks and honestly it should have ended in S1— but being diverse conspires with the supposed oppressive regime the handmaids live in. Somehow they made Gilead a nice place to live.
I haven’t seen “Bridgerton” but I felt its diversity odd since it is unbelievable the existence of a black British nobility, even if there are one or two historical examples of it. On the other hand, “The Great” plays the same trick and does it well because the show is absurd so, yeah, whatever, there were black Russian nobles in the 18th century, huzzah!
The point, if diversity is done in a way that doesn’t interfere with the story you want to tell it is done well and only bigots are bothered or feel that it is unfair. But if diversity is put on the front or just to fulfil an agenda then it is done badly and it bothers also the “woke” spectator, not because of diversity but because of lousy storytelling.
So, these are my guesses.
But the real reason? I don’t know.
I should ask people.

"爆笑女子乐队"没有做到多样性，因为它完全集中在伦敦的穆斯林社区，但观看一个关于另一种文化的节目的"陌生感"很快就被遗忘了，因为它做得很好，很快你就沉浸在看一个关于全女子朋克乐队及其神经质的叙述者/主角吉他手的愚蠢喜剧里。
另一方面，"蝙蝠女侠"在多样性方面做得很烂。你不断地被提醒主角是女同性恋，而且在第二季，成了黑人。更不用说很大一部分主要演员也是女同性恋和/或黑人的事实被提到了前面。因此，本来是一个很好的想法--一个黑人女同性恋超级英雄--变成了一个无聊的宣传节目，讲述一个没有深度的角色。
"使女的故事"的多样性做得很奇怪。我在法西斯独裁国家生活过，知道美国的种族主义，我觉得黑人在吉利厄德被容忍是很奇怪的，更不用说他们中的一些人是女仆或"收养"的孩子。这部剧并不坏--好吧，第三季很烂，老实说，它应该在第一季就结束了--但多样化与女仆们生活中的所谓压迫性政权是相悖的。不知何故，他们把吉利厄德变成了一个感觉很不错的居住地。
我没有看过《布里奇顿》，但我觉得它的多样性很奇怪，因为“英国黑人贵族”的存在是令人难以置信的，即使历史上有过一两个例子。另一方面，《凯瑟琳大帝》也玩了同样的把戏，而且做得很好，因为该剧很荒诞，所以，是的，不管怎样，18世纪有过俄国黑人贵族，芜湖！
关键是，如果多样性是以一种不影响你想讲的故事的方式进行的，那就做得很好，只有偏执狂才会感到烦恼或觉得不公平。但是，如果多样性被放在首要地位，或者只是为了实现一个议程，那么它就做得很糟糕，它也困扰着"清醒的"观众，不是因为多样性，而是因为糟糕的故事。
