High concentration farming is a very economically efficient way to produce animal products but a biosecurity nightmare. They are a perfect environment for hosting and mutating viruses. Virologists have been warning us about these for decades.

Bacteria are highly adaptive since they have a very short generation time and can share genetic information more easily than other organisms.
And if it wasn't enough reason to ditch it already, it is absolutely awful for animal welfare.

The problem is political, sure you could increase animal welfare standards until a pound of beef cost £20 but then a lot of ordinary people wouldn't be able to afford it any more and would be rather cross. I think that should probably happen because beef has such a high carbon footprint (and there are plenty of alternatives). However making chicken 3 times as expensive across the board would go down so badly I don't think the government that brought it in would survive.

I agree, there is a kind of culpability deadlock. Policy makers won't dare risk alienating potential voters or upsetting industry. They can blame both the public and the producers. The producers can blame the consumers for continuing to support them claiming that they are just supplying demand and blame the policy makers for allowing them to operate this way. The consumers can also just blame the government for not reigning the industry in and the producers for operating at the cost of the environment.
I think the only way to unpick it is with a continued effort bringing these kinds of problems into the public consciousness. People won't support policy that increases luxuries unless they understand the true cost of not doing so. They won't give up their steak unless they know what's at stake. Education on this topic is a must as far as I'm concerned. It's the only way to increase support for preventing the kind of damage that this industry causes. There can be no shadow of doubt that can be used to obscure the reality of the situation or be used as a scapegoat by any of the components involved.
I think awareness of these issues is heading in the right direction. I just hope it isn't too little too late.

When used symbiotically in a permaculture setting, animals provide a benefit to our food production by reducing our need for pesticides, fertilizers, predator control, and more. Chickens and ducks provide helpful pest control, reducing the need for pesticides without losing crop yields. They provide eggs to eat, and meat toward the end of their life, they can be fed from garden and food waste, and more. The same is true of so many other animals, goats, pigs, ducks, dogs, cats, wild animals too, they all play a role in the ecosystem and we can use that to our advantage and learn to work with them, not against them. This is how people have farmed pre—industrial revolution and we can bring a lot of that back without the environmental destruction of animal ag, but people need to get used to not eating meat every day, maybe once or twice a week.
The other problem with this “vegan is the solution to everything” is it doesn’t take into account local environments. Any one-size-fits-all solution will not work on a global scale. I live in Canada, further north in BC and I get 5 months of frost on the ground where I can’t grow. I hunt to supplement my calories because I avoid going to the supermarket (and swear off supermarket meat altogether fyi), so a vegan diet means shipping up vegetables from California or Mexico; what do you think that costs in fossil fuels? Even worse for the Natives that live in the proper winter climates in the territories where they have permafrost, long winters, and live in places that often don’t even have road access and are only accessible by airplane. How much fossil fuels do you think would be wasted by forcing them to switch to a vegan diet in their environment? People need to make choices that reflect their local environment, it would make zero sense for me to hunt in California, for example.
This idea that vegan is the only way is a false dichotomy and damaging to any real solutions.

Humans don’t need animal products
I'm fully on board with fighting against factory farming, but I really wish people would stop parroting this without knowing how wrong it is. There are plenty of people out there that do legitimately need animal products to get all the nutrients they need. I'm one of them. I'm allergic to nuts and have GI issues that make many soy, wheat, and legume products difficult for my stomach to handle. There isn't a milk alternative that doesn't absolutely wreck my stomach, and it's essentially impossible for me to get a reasonable amount of iron and essential amino acids without eating meat. I'm very much team "Fuck factory farms", but I'm gonna be losing my hair if I go vegan, and I'm not the only person in that boat. There's a reason there are so many people that stopped being vegan because they couldn't get proper nutrients. Not needing animal products is a privilege, not a blanket rule.
