As I write, fourteen people have answered this question pretty much the same way—no! they all seem to say.
My view is that humans are just one species to have developed high-level intelligence over the past 300 million years. Animal species right now have brains larger than humans; they exhibit comparable intelligent behaviors.
Whales are the most obvious example of high intelligence; the problem for them is lack of appendages to build tools—an indicator of intelligence, which humans tout with a kind of supremacist-like pride.
Whales, dolphins, apes, ground hogs, dogs, some insects colonies, and octopuses are examples of species who live alongside humans today; all show uncanny abilities to live and thrive in environments likely to kill most humanoids.
What non-human animals possess is the ability to live in extreme poverty. They don’t complain; they remain optimistic while they watch without weapons intelligent apes overrun their habitats to both eat and exterminate them.
65 million years ago dinosaurs suffered an extinction event. Most people believe an asteroid struck the Gulf of Mexico.
What if the catastrophe was a fast-mutating virus? Dinosaur doctors and epidemiologists might find themselves stumped in the same way human virologists now flail helplessly in the face of a coronavirus no human will ever see because the virus spans a distance equivalent to one wavelength of ultra-violet light.
We don’t have the time to “science” our way out; perhaps, neither did intelligent dinosaurs.
Nothing from 100 million years ago that isn’t fossilized is likely to have been left behind for modern science to examine.
Think about it.
Perhaps a baby dinosaur once asked their mother, “Momma, is it possible that those furry little things in the forest will become intelligent like us?”

It’s absolutely possible. If we could do it, why not another species. It might not happen until after humanity goes extinct, but if it did happen contemporarily it might be hard to tell. Even if they gained that kind of intelligence, it doesn’t mean we could communicate with them to discern it. It’s a tricky issue when you get into the details, but definitely possible.

I do not think that is possible for two main reasons. First, for changes to take place in some of the animals, those changes would only come along with changes in their environment. If they are dying because they need to read books, they they may learn to read books. I don’t know where they will get the books from.
I do not think there is enough time for any animals besides humans to change enough within the timefrx. Life on our planet will only be possible for a few million years and not enough time is left on this planet for the birds to learn how to fly in airplanes. You can see the problem.

“Is it possible…?” and similar wording almost always has one answer — “Yes.”
You should be asking “What are the chances…?” or “What is the likelihood…?”
As long as humans are around, it is as close to impossible as we can imagine — except if humans decide to tinker with genes and make other life on Earth more intelligent. Strange, no?
BTW, other life on Earth is already intelligent, as in being self-aware and able to count and communicate. Is that “like humans”?
So sorry, but ambiguous questions tend to have ambiguous answers.

Some animals talk.
Parrots, for example and some other birds. Parrots can have simple conversations like 3 year old human babies, with 6 month old human brains.
Since people have pets like cats and dogs inside, these are starting to communicate with humans.
For instance, my cat had different meows for wanting food, wanting cuddles and wanting to go outside. Dogs often use different barks for danger, play and wanting food. Dolphins in aquariums “talk” (squeak) to their trainers. Sheep bleat to each other and cows moo.
Birds chirp to each other and seem to communicate. Whales sing.
In another century, this could be more distinct, in a millennium it could be very clear.
If they get to the point of rudimentary language, animals could communicate with us better. I am sure they have basic needs of food, water, and medical care when they are sick, so I would expect them to ask for what they need or want.
It would be amazing if their brains expanded and they could have more complex thoughts and conversations, but then again, cats would probably say “if you don’t get me dinner now I will suffocate you when you sleep”, and dogs will repeat “can we play? can we play?” so maybe it is better that they don’t talk.

Al Klein notes, correctly, that the niche of ‘highly intelligent” is filled by us and we are thriving everywhere so it would be hard to replace us.
My contribution is to note that we are more than highly intelligent. We are highly social, have great communication ability and have dexterous hands. Oh, and live in air.
In contrast, whales are highly intelligent and great communication skills but no hands and so can’t do much with technology- they can’t make stuff.
Further, in water, even if they did have dexterous appendages, as octopi do, in water, they can’t separate compounds the way we do in air. They can’t make fire. They can’t study atoms, molecules or elements.
If 100 other apes, unrelated, were trapped in a long metal tube as many of us often are in passenger flight, there would be bloody battle. They just aren’t sociable in the way we are. So their communications suffer.
For another lifeform to be like humans, not considering appearance, there are many hurdles of which intelligence is just one.

Unlikely. In 500 million years of complex life only one species (us) seems to have made this evolutionary experiment and quite recently, and it is still far too early to tell if this has been a success or is an evolutionary dead-end - we nearly died out at least once as a species, and have come close to wiping ourselves out more than once.
Certainly the chances now are pretty much zero, as humans have spread so widely there is no niche remaining that a species might occupy to evolve to intelligence like ours. Maybe long after we are gone there is a chance, but could easily be another half billion years or much longer, and there’s only a billion or two years before changes in the earth’s situation starts to make conditions less suitable - the expanding sun, the gradual ending of plate tectonics, the slowing of the core and therefore deterioration of the earth’s magnetosphere, the moon drifting further and therefore declining tides.

Yes, in fact some day somehow there will be some modern-day humans who will evolve into meta-humans. There are meta-humans from this planet as well as from other planets. Linear Time as we understand it, is an illusion! They belong to an Intergalactic Federation of Planets such as depicted in Star Trek—-minus the meta-humans unfortunately! Somehow this has not been foreseen in Star Trek! These meta-humans will more or less look like us with some differences.
However, it should be acknowledged that while we have a unique high level of intelligence among the Animal Kingdom we also tend to have a lot of weaknesses which other animals do not have. Birds can navigate much better than we can for example, and without a GP system…and even if we use one!

If we don’t end life here on earth before other species here can develop human-like self awareness, creativity, and intelligence - I sure hope they observe our failure and have a more inclusive, holistic society. Our lack of and inability to create such a balanced society is our ultimate, fatal downfall.

Ha! Ha! You fall into an obvious trap there. Haven’t you seen “The Planets of the Apes?” There “other life” on earth became even more intelligent than humans. I loved that movie. In that movie our present-day apes took over the world, evolving into quite believable beings. Just wait until we get “Planet of the Dogs” and/or “ Planet of the Alligators,” etc. That all means that, to me, it is quite possible for other forms of life to become “intelligent like humans.” Evolution is still gong on! It has been going on out there in the universe, on those millions of planets revolving around those millions of suns, having long ago, produced animate creatures that we can only imagine…our extraterrestrial neighbors in their UFO’s are proof of that, pooh, pooh, it all or not. Their evolution produced those amazingly, technologically advanced beings long before our solar system and our earth even came into existence. Just as possible are other beings now still in a very primitive stage, the evolution on their planet or planets being far behind ours. As to how they look, it all depends on the type of evolution that their planet or planets have gone through or is going through, and many other factors, such as the distance from their sun, the gravitational pull on their planet, etc. For example, as unpleasant as are the so-called Green Men with their huge, ominous-looking … somehow always pictured as black,…eyes, could that be because their sun is so far away, that evolution produced those eyes to compensate for the possible “gloom” of their planet. Every animate being has to “see!” Well, most of them, anyway.

Three scenarios can be considered: one where another species is bred for intelligence by humans, on other happening under the nose of humanity but with its direct control and lastly without humanity, i.e long after humanity disappeared.
another species can become very intelligent by using domestication, breeding and sexting for intelligence as opposed to the amount of edible substance an organism may offer us. All I can say it’s possible and may quite likely be attempted for a variety of reasons.
another species isn’t likely to become equally intelligent to humans, while humans are present, due to that it might pose existential threat. Consider Neanderthal and other hominids to fall into this category.
Long after humanity’s demise, there’s no reason why another species couldn’t retrace our steps and develop a technological civilization. Will certainly take millions of years but possible.

In my opinion I believe that the answer is no. I think that at this point, humans have evolved to become so intelligent thst they would not stand for another type of life on earth to become as intelligent as them, and would stop them before they could evolve to such a high level of intelligence.

Test Run
To answer this you need to specify what makes a human more intelligent than other life, or really if that is the case.
Many of the factors that are used to claim humans are the most intelligent life can be countered with other examples, and all of these tests are biased based on what we perceive is necessary to reveal intelligence.
Assuming human tests are accurate, then there are many animals that already possess near human intelligence, including whales, dolphins and their relatives, many species among the great apes families, and even some small birds such as crows and jays.
Many animals can use and even make simple tools, have high brain to body ratios (in this humans remain the highest) and can communicate in their own languages, both vocal and physical.
All of these animals have potential in the far future to develop their intelligence to the level of competing with or even surpassing that of humans now.
However, if it is required that they attain this intelligence unaided, then I doubt that such will happen within the age of humanity.
We, by nature, consider ourselves a superior race, and fear anything that approaches our superiority without our supervision and control. If we do not have a hand in its creation, we attack and destroy anything we believe threatens our position as the masters of our world.
If anything on this Earth were to gain such intelligence it would be after we humans have long gone extinct or moved on from our world of origin to grow and evolve in the depths of unknown space.
However, there is also potential that some of the mad scientists around the world will work and influence some of these intelligent species to aid in their progress, though these would likely face the hardship of being considered inferior to humans and regardless would be reliant on them for any work in developing technology so long as their bodies were limited in the dexterity to utilize advanced tools.
Outside the animal kingdom we simply are too different to be certain that life does not possess intelligence potentially exceeding our own not to say the least of potential intelligent life beyond the atmosphere.
For all we know the ancient trees on this planet have answers to some of life's existential questions just waiting for the day we become smart enough to understand them.

Life is Beautiful
Dolphins are the 2nd most intelligent life form on Earth, next to Humans.
They have complicated communication networks that evolved into their biology.
Evolution is based on freaks of nature that form tribes separate from the status quo and grow in number. From that group, freaks of nature emerge, and form tribes, and it all happens again. This repeats over millions of years.
Beware the freaks. They are, by nature, better than you. Nature is self-correcting, and the freak is the correction.
This in no way means that the old species will always die out when the new species become dominant.
I bet there are even some neanderthal tribes leftover, somewhere on earth.
Homo Sapiens and Neanderthal lived at the same time. We outnumbered them, soundly.
There are lots of intelligent animals, but they are not intelligent like Humans.
Humans evolved along a specific path that took a very long time to emerge into.
If mice evolved along the same path as Humans and built a civilization, you can bet there would be so many differences between us that it would be hard to determine their intelligence by Human Standards.
