Many people are answering this without ever having been to or lived in China. Many people portray China as terrible. Because of people’s prejudices, people think the worst of a people they do not understand.

Oakland, the larger city nearby, has far greater number of homeless living in tents under highway overpasses.
It is so shameful that a rich state like California cannot afford to find housing for them.

In fact my theory is that this is what have been keeping China as one country for the past 2000 some years. It is the pictographic nature of the written language that is more stable over phonetic variation. The Latin/Greek root languages in Europe changed as people’s pronunciation changed and turned to totally different language, thus irreversibly to different countries with their own culture.
