I would honestly say about only a quarter of people in my area and the surrounding towns wear masks in shops, pubs and stores (public transport being an exception).
I work in a country pub, none of the staff wear masks, very rarely you get a customer with one on.
Where we are at least, things seem pretty much back to normal.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it where I am. I'd say at best, there's been about 30% wearing masks when I've got on the bus or gone to the supermarket. The bus companies also seem to be allowing as many on as before the pandemic, so I do my best to travel when its not as busy, but I cant always avoid it

Those “terminally terrified” people you are on about may be clinically vulnerable people like me, or household members of clinically vulnerable people.
With cases this high I have to shield, even from the people in my own house. Being outdoors with a mask may be the one thing those people can do safely. Not everyone can make antibodies or get vaccinated. I for example had no antibodies after infection and an autoimmune response to the vaccine. I have myocarditis which has caused heart damage and long covid symptoms for 10 months now. I look like a regular young person without health issues though.
So don’t judge people too harshly. You don’t know what they’re dealing with. What you perceive as low risk could get me killed.

I really didn't mean to offend or judge anybody BUT the "sages" have done a very good job of terrifying everyone but have offered little in return when lockdowns are lifted. This applies especially to things like hand washing which is still really effective in cutting down transmission and seems to have been largely omitted in continuing advice. The wearing of a basic surgical mask is really not that great when I see people using a clearly ancient mask and constantly fiddling with them and touching door handles etc. Yuck!

People like me can no longer safely leave the house because they scrapped all restrictions and got the messaging so wrong. To be fair, while hand washing is very important, covid is airborne so fresh air, distancing and masks are really what they should have prioritised rather than putting “hands” first in their slogan. Lots of people also think washing hands is good enough and the mask is secondary, which is a big problem.
In many European countries a “face covering” is not considered adequate, you need FFP2 at least. And the government provides this. Public places, schools and workplaces have to have CO2 monitors and air filters by law now in Belgium. “Living with the virus” does not have to mean pretending it doesn’t exist and needlessly endangering the vulnerable.
I just think it’s important to keep in mind that if you still see someone in a mask or someone who looks anxious, they may genuinely be at risk of serious harm and trying to protect themselves. So give them space and don’t judge them or make fun of them. Covid is asymptomatic in some people but causes organ damage, long covid, or death in others. The people who got lucky have to remember this.

I had covid in March and it has completely fucked me. I am incredibly lucky that I have an understanding boss who has done what he can to make changes to support me, but my job role has completely changed and I am no longer able to work full time.
I think it's very easy for people who haven't been affected by covid to keep on imagining it's just like the flu and we all have to just get on with it - I really urge these people to consider how easy it is to just keep on wearing a mask and giving people space. These things are not hard to do at all but they keep people safe. Why are you going to let someone die just because you can't keep a bit of fabric over your mouth and nose?

I'm presently outside the UK and have been astonished by some of the comments like this that I've read here the last few weeks.
It was unthinkable to me that one would go without a mask in the supermarket, so kept my eyes peeled when I went for groceries this week - sure enough, not a single person was without one. I bet you'd get admonished by staff for not wearing one, like that one time I went into a supermarket to try and buy some masks because I'd left home without mine.
I fucking hate wearing a mask, but I can't believe they're being dropped already.

Where I am, a lot of people never wore a mask in the supermarket. Even during the highest lockdown level. I don't think I have ever been in a shop where every person was wearing a mask.

From my perspective, masks are still nearly universal in supermarkets. Quite common on public transport, but this is location dependent, it's very high in London and very low everywhere else.
Mask wearing in shops that aren't supermarkets, however, practically non-existent.
But I still don't know how we'd determine solid numbers for efficacy of mask wearing anyway, the benefits are all largely theoretical. Even at the peak in January the rules in the UK that were being mostly followed were still less strict than other places, e.g. no masks outdoors. It seems the whole mask rules, in most countries whatever the rules happened to be, were a "can't do any harm" thing. The impact of mask use waning is therefore difficult to quantify.
Some of the UK rules were clearly nonsense from the get-go, like the "wear a mask if you stand up, but not if you sit down" pub/restaurant rule.

If the government said that masks were compulsory I would wear one. As it stands, it’s down to personal choice so I don’t. I don’t really have a good reason for why I don’t I just choose not too now that everyone’s had the opportunity to be double vaccinated.
Nightclubs; venues and stadiums are all open at full capacity with people standing heel to heel together and the majority of those will not be wearing masks. We have reached an almost return normality So I don’t see the need to wear a mask when doing my shopping.

Surprised this has upvotes on this subreddit to be honest. Good to see someone recognising vaccination as the game changer it is.
We shouldn't really be arguing so much about masks, instead about what support should be provided to those that cannot vaccinate/get good immunity from it. Perhaps furlough can be extended for these individuals? Mask wearing just isn't good enough, given repeat exposures, if they have a customer facing role. Masks will help, but it shouldn't be the primary measure in aiding those that are still vulnerable.

I'm one of those people - I'm double vaxxed, but found out after my second vaccine that my antibody response to vaccines is very low, so I'm still high risk and particularly concerned about covid's role in Epstein-Barr reactivation because that damn thing knocked me off my feet for a year back when I was an apparently healthy teenager doing competitive sports. I never fully recovered.
I'm freelance and was therefore never eligible for furlough, so good luck extending furlough for me. When I teach evening classes or run workshops, or when I work with actors who have their masks of for filming, as I did all last autumn and after lockdown lifted in the spring, I rely on N95/FFP3 masks and knowing how to fit them.
I don't see myself giving up my masks any time soon. They're the best protection I have against people who won't lift (or wash) a finger to protect the vulnerable.

There's no lix between these things. Most people don't go to nightclubs or stadiums (and those who do mostly don't do so very often), and certainly not most of those who feel at risk.

I visited the U.K. last week for a funeral. I had three people (in Winchester and Southampton) comment on me wearing a mask. Saying I was being stupid and over the top.
Funny how they all changed their attitude when I pulled down my mask and said “well I’m not wearing it for me but because I flew in from France two days ago so am wearing it in case I caught covid at the airport and don’t know it yet. I wouldn’t want to make you ill so I wear a mask”.
Weird how people get so interested in what someone else is wearing.

人们为何会对别人的穿着佩戴如此感兴趣，真是太让人费解了。
