Yeah, I'm curious how Ford is going to handle the battery supply issues. Tesla has been pushing hard for a while for more supply, but they're still restricted by it. Tesla's total production across all models, across all continents is currently about the same as only F-150. If Ford is only making 80,000/year Lightnings, and Cybertruck is at 250,000/year (I can't find the source I based my earlier guess on, but this one has firmer numbers), and assuming they all sell, Tesla will still be #1 in changing the market even if people do like the F-150 Lightning more. Ford seems to be relying on 3rd party battery suppliers while Tesla produces their own and I think I heard they're even buying their own lithium mines. Maybe Ford will have to get in that game as well if they want to stay competitive, but we'll see.
And, as Elon often says, prototypes are easy, large-scale production is hard. Ford has a lot of experience with ICE vehicles, but we'll see how it translates to EVs. Mach E seems promising, but we'll see if the same will be true for the Lighting. A lot of "we'll see", but that's about all anyone can do at this point. This article is garbage for suggesting anything otherwise.

Ford sells ~1 million Trucks per year, but has targeted a very limp ~50k a year of its Mustang Mach-e.
And the truck is a larger challenge, because it requires a far larger battery pack, and Ford just don't have the great contracts Tesla does, because they're (so far) dragging their feet.
From the figures Ford has given, it's estimated their battery packs are ~100-120 kWh for the 230 mile range version, and ~140-170 kWh for the 300 mile range version.
This means they need at least ~120 GWh of batteries per year, just to fully switch their trucks to EV, that includes no vans and no cars.
Additionally, Ford may have made a critical mistake in the timing of their announcement and how competitive the truck is.
But how much demand for ICE trucks will they lose now that people know this is coming? (i.e. people delaying/stopping their purchase of an ICE to wait for an EV)
And, important to note, that Ford makes most of its profit from the truck division, so is the division that hurts them the most to lose sales from. And Ford has a mountain of debt, with very low margins on most of their cars.
So, Ford has designed a great truck, but due to them dragging their feet on EV production, their debt, and the Osborne Effect, they have a very real chance of going bankrupt before they can make enough of them to "change the EV industry".

Maybe some background info to help everyone. I am a combustion engineer at an automotive OEM.
The new emissions regulations come in 2025, and any BEVs sold now help to build up credits that OEMs can help to meet the targets in 2025 onwards. Ford needs these to sell in order to do so.
All you see recently, all this flurry to launch xEVs by all OEMs is for this reason. This isn't us being green and environmentally friendly all of a sudden. It's just simple business pushed by regulations. We would all keep doing V8s otherwise.

Brandwhoring doesn't achieve anything. These trucks have a <100 mile range when under load, which is expected and will probably hurt their actual use.
The real change in the EV industry is something like the Tesla truck which Ford has no alternative to because Ford killed the L-series. The success (or not) of these vehicles over the next two decades will ultimately determine where the industry heads, moreso than any consumer vehicle.

Both companies are planning on selling higher end models going up to $80,000+ for fully loaded options. Neither will likely be available until late 2022 so I guess we have a long time to wait for more details.

i think tesla makes some awesome cars, but the auto pilot thing is a scam. for years, elon musk has been saying "driving to anywhere automatically will be released later this year" but has never delivered. people have been selling their Teslas with the auto pilot feature and never even got to use it. it's a scam.
