Officials also expressed expectations that the KF-X fighter jets will compete in the global market with fifth-generation fighter jets such as the U.S. aerospace giant Lockheed Martin's F-35 and F-22, based on price and technology competitiveness. "As the KF-X has been equipped with hardware to become a stealth fighter, we are currently exploring ways to apply stealth technologies to the jet, although we have yet to specify details for further developments as the military has yet to present the details necessary for further developments after Block I and Block II stages of the KF-X development project," Jung Kwang-sun, director general of the KF-X Program Group under the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), told reporters who were visiting KAI headquarters, Feb. 24.

The KF-X project is an "evolutionary development" project which is divided into two phases. The first phase, or the Block I stage, is about developing the basic system of the fighter jet from 2016 to 2026. Block 2 is planned to be full STEALTH. The development of block 2, particularly the software has already been started. The design has already considered internal weapon with 6 AA missiles.

This plane is stealth like without internal weapons bay....why didnt go all in stealth plane I wonder...

Despite it doesnt have internal weapon bay in block 1, but the overall RCS will be much reduce compared to 4 generation design like Rafale. And dont forget it does have semi internal weapon for 4 missiles if you look on the belly. For STEALTH configuration it can fly quite STEALTHY with 4 missiles in the belly. Here
Other reasons:
1. To make it less complicated and the full STEALTH version will be developed in block 2 (according to the plan, and yes it has allready been developed now). Need to inform you that the design has already considered internal weapon bay. You can see sticky KFX/IFX thread to read from the engineers words themselves
2. Indonesia needs long range fighter and we need additional fuel tanks. It is due to our vast territory, both sea and land. Korea also consider China and Japan as threat, so they are also benefiting from this design.
3. We can see even USA is still buying F 15 EX, it shows less STEALTH fighter is still useful in real combat.

The build quality looks immaculate, perfect. At Western Standards for sure. They have achieved a lot given their size and the cost of the programme. A 4.5+ gen homegrown is better than not having it, and it gives them the foundation on which to attempt a 5-6 gen hybrid platform for the next iteration.

Latest photos from Korea Aerospace Industries assembly line featuring KF-X and Light Armed Helicopter were unveiled yesterday. These images were accompanied by several important upxes regarding the overall program.
As of now, 8 prototype aircraft are being assembled simultaneously and four of them are already in late or final stages. 6 will be used for flight testing while 2 will be used for ground testing. 2 prototypes will be two-seater variants.
The first prototype aircraft is about 92% assembled and will be unveiled in April. First flight is expected to occur on July, 2022 following a year of ground testing. 2nd 3rd prototypes will finish assembly by the end of the year and 4th ~ 6th by next year. Overall development is scheduled to be completed by 2026 following operational deployment of KF-X.
As of first prototype aircraft, localization rates of four “core technology” are as follows:
AESA Radar: 89%
IRST: 37%
EO TGP: 82%
EW Suite: 77%
Lastly, KF-X will reportedly be painted same color as ROKAF’s F-15K (dark grey).
KF-X is a 4.5th gen fighter jet being developed by Korea Aerospace Industries in partnership with Lockheed Martin for the Republic of Korea Air Force. Featuring dimension of 16.9m x 4.7m x 11.2m, KF-X is larger than F-16 and is of similiar size as F-18. Development of KF-X began in earnest on January 2016 and the assembly process began in 2019 after Critical Design Review (CDR) was completed in 2018. KF-X will operate alongside more advanced F-35A in ROKAF inventory.
Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) is based on the Airbus H155B1 (EC155), which is a modernized version of older AS365 Dauphin, and is being developed to replace the Republic of Korea Army's aging MD500 Defender helicopters.. KAI took over the manufacturing license for the model and is developing both military (LAH) and civil (LCH) models. Meanwhile, Airbus has shifted its focus to its latest H160 helicopter.

This KFX jet was first meant to replace the old Vietnam War era F-4 and F-5 jets, but the decision makers decided why stop there, why not South Korea have their own stealthy jet? South Korea also developed their own AESA radar, after the US side refused the tech transfer. The engine is a General Electric engine to start, while the South Korea is secretly developing their own engine and hope to replace it in few years. This new KFX jet will position between the 4th gen F-15 and the 5th gen F-35 to start, but they are planning block 2 and block 3 stages where it will become a full fledged 5th gen stealth fighter. The first service date is scheduled for 2026, while the first prototype will begin testing in April or May of this year.

Block 3 KF-X will have a fully functional internal weapons bay. The first blocks will have weapons mounted externally, but the later models can carry them internally for stealth.
It's not without precedence to "add" stealth to an airfrx, Boeing tried it on the Advanced Super Hornet and F-15 Silent Eagle, but it's obviously better to design it in from the start. South Korea are in a slightly better position in that the actually structural shaping mostly follows conventional stealth principles, and they'll be improving the materials and electronic side of things over time. It probably won't come close to Lockheed's or Northrop's stealth platforms, but it'll be a good start, better than the 4th gen platforms like Typhoon and Rafale.

Yeah if the F-35 has an RCS of less than 0.01 M2, then KF-X probably will ultimately end up with a frontal RCS of 0.1 M2 or so. That's still a huge deal, it will more than cut detection ranges in half in comparison to existing airfrxs. That's still a massive tactical advantage.

Lifecycle costs are 70% of the price of an aircraft, after all. If you can get those costs down, you're getting a better deal than you would with a lower unit cost usually.
