Lmao this changes absolutely nothing. It''''s terrible. I''''m in Canberra and there has been smoke here for the last few weeks. It''''s constant and obscures visibility. Yet our PM is telling us that we "worry unnecessarily". Stupid fucker claims that it''''s the Greens (a minor party that hasnt been in power in almost forever) who didn''''t back burn enough when he slashed firefighting budgets by 75 percent. He also literally told us that we don''''t need more firefighters because the volunteer firefighters "want to be there". Marching wont change anything when every major news outlet is a mouthpiece for the right and every boomer is content to repeat sound bites ad infinitum. Australia is literally burning and there is nothing we can do about it.

I guess we also have to consider the root cause of the government s refusal to enact more environment friendly policies, which is the predominance of mining sector(coal if I an not mistaken). Realistically we need to invest in bushfire prevention and increased resources in the rural fire services so we can deal with this when it inevitably happens agains. I understand people are angry and climate change action is relevant, but Australia is not about to curb these bushfires now, or in the near future, with it''''s own climate action. Nope, not overnight. That''''s why I said phased out. You''''re right, we can''''t just shut off our coal plants! But we can stop building new ones, because at the present time new build solar plus battery storage is actually cheaper in Australia than new build coal or gas.
At the same time, we can replace old coal stations as they age out and reach the end of their life cycle, replace with wind or solar. It''''s practical, it''''s cheaper, and it pollutes less even if you ignore C02. We can keep some coal mining going for steel production and other smelting and refining, until a practical zero-carbon solution to that is rolled out. It''''s quite reasonable to aim for near-zero emissions within 15 years.
We actually worked out the practical economics of this just over a decade ago, and it made sense even then. In 2019 the unprecedented drop in price of solar and battery storage makes it a no-brainer. There''''s places in Australia which already run entirely on clean power, including my hometown, Canberra. Canberra is the capital city, if you didn''''t know.
It''''s ironic that the federal politicians in Parliament House, which is 15 minutes drive from me, are so ignorant and useless on this vital issue when the local politicians who run Canberra are so practical and effective.
All this policy that I want the politicians to carry out is based on deeply researched science, on good solid economics, and on majority public support. The supposedly pro-market party that leads us actually recently suggested nationalising an aging coal station that the company running it wants to close.
Again, the studies have been done, and the cheapest solution is renewable energy. Climate change mitigation is a bonus. I totally understand that some protesters are unrealistic and haven''''t done their homework. That always happens. Every side has its idiots.
Edit: oh yeah, and it''''ll take us longer, at least 30 years, to phase out petrol, diesel, and fuel oil in our transport system. The plans and research on that is not nearly as settled as for our electricity generation system. But plausible solutions are there, including electric cars and trucks, and batteries are only getting cheaper.

I''''m sure wildfires have been exacerbated by global warming, but by all means they''''re a natural occurrence. When people try to stop them, forests get choked with underbrush and dead trees, and become more susceptible to an even worse wildfire.

Our leaders ignore climate change , cut funding to its study and want it not reported on by the government broadcaster. They want to sell more and more coal to the most polluting countries and don’t care we rate 57th (behind China and India) when it comes to doing anything to help the change of climate. Even the environment minister avoided attending the UN climate summit claiming he’s too busy.
Hence the protests.
