Three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Eastern Germany has lost lots of its population: almost 2 million people since 1989 to be exact. Overall, the population in the east has dipped to the same level it was in 1905. So is Eastern Germany on the verge of disappearing? Searching for answers, DW''s Carl Nasman takes a closer look at Eisenhüttenstadt, a city that has lost more than half of its population.

I''m sceptical of the 2 million figure. Most of it likely diverted to Berlin and a few other cities. Minimal or no improvement to trains, airports, or internet. Germany could easily have influenced/subsidized large conglomerates like VW, Allianz, etc. to shift part of their business to the East. Cheaper labor. Clearly that didn''t happen.

The legacy of totalitarianism. The AFD talks but is incapable and unwilling to do anything to change life for the people who they pander to. The German state need to seriously push investment in the east if they want to see this trend change.

30 years later and Germany still has NO direct air service from the United States to the former East. Train service in the former East is also horrible with inconvenient time tables and too many stops to get from major cities between East and West Germany. But, 90% of the immigration ends up in the East. The West WANTS the East to remain at a lower status. The new immigrants from Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, etc will provide cheap labor for the West.

Shiny new Streets and Facades have no Future - jobs do. This is not a legacy of the GDR it?s a legacy of WWII. After 1945 with half of Germany occupied the free German industrial and financial structure were reorganized to the west, while the east gave reparations to the Russians, the west got investments from the usa. 70 Years later German political and industry leader cultivated that mindset only the west can produce, has infrastructure and has skilled workers. So they closed the last factories in the 90ies get rid of possible competitors, instead of investing. It seems it will take the courage of a US Entrepreneur to start a new age to remind Politics and Industry leaders of the legacy of big industrial leaders of the east, like Siemens or Rathenau.

I think it really has to do with your upbringing.
