Yes, the Chinese are humble and it’s not an act. Hence, the biggest culture shock I had when first arriving in Beijing in 2010 was to discover that the Chinese remain determined to appear humble and do not appreciate braggarts.

I am American, born and raised in Texas, but spent some some time in Washington D.C. as a child while studying at college in New Hampshire. So when talking with my fellow Americans when I lived there, we spent at least 80 percent of our conversations bragging about ourselves or people we knew, while it was commonly understood that our stories might not be so accurate but that’s OK.

我是美国人，在德州出生和长大，但是儿时在华盛顿特区度过了一段时间，在新罕布什尔州读大学。所以在美国时我和朋友们聊天80%都是在吹嘘我们自己或者我们认识的人，而且我们都清楚对方说的事情可能没有那么准确，但是这没关系。

A good story teller can make you more popular. Hence the truth only matters if that makes the tale even better. Accordingly, you need to change a few details when explaining your last fishing trip. Who cares that you really caught a small minnow, it’s better to say after hours of struggle you finally reeled in a full-sized shark.

Many Americans act arrogant not because they have malicious intent, but simply out of habit and few people have suggested they alter their behavior. When bragging is encouraged, not discouraged you will breed a society of people with an inflated sense of self-importance.

I too struggled with such attitudes before coming to China, but the Chinese are very adept at humbling people. When you start bragging, they ignore you, if you continue to brag they keep ignoring you and if you stop bragging they might communicate with you again.

来到中国之前我也是这样的态度，但是中国人很擅长令人谦恭。当你开始吹牛时，他们就直接无视你，如果你继续吹牛，他们继续无视你，如果你停止吹牛了，他们可能会再次和你交流。

Very easy lesson to learn here, but in my arrogance it took me more than five years to figure that basic concept out. Fortunately, the Chinese can be very forgiving too, but if I go back to bragging, they will return to ignoring me, so it’s best I refrain from taking chances.

这其实是很简单的概念，可是由于我的傲慢，我在中国待了5年时间后才明白这个道理。幸运的是，中国人也非常宽容，但是如果我再次吹牛的话，他们还是会继续无视我，所以我只能克制。

Humility plays a large role in society, since the Chinese have deep concerns about promoting a harmonious society. Outsiders are skeptical about this but the Chinese believe harmony is what keeps the peace, makes people productive members to society and can establish better opportunities for others. In other words, when you are my friend, I will be your friend and we help each other out.

谦卑在社会中扮演着重要的作用，因为中国人致力于建设一个和谐社会。外人对此颇有微词，但是中国人认为和谐可以带来和平，可以让人们对社会带来贡献，以及可以为他人建立更好的机会。换言之，当你是我朋友时，我就是你的朋友，我们互相帮助。

Consequently, arrogant people can cause disruptions, since people are expected to fulfill their promises. When a braggart claims he will introduce others to rich and powerful friends for everyone’s benefit, but fails to accomplish that because he was not speaking truth; then he will find himself and shunned by others.

所以自大的人会带来破坏，因为人们被期望履行承诺。如果一个人吹牛说将为他人引荐富有而有权的朋友，从而给所有人带来好处，可最终他没能实现这个诺言，因为他撒谎了吹牛了；那么他人就会远离他。

Humility is effective by sparking action. A braggart lives in his own fantasy world, while lies and false promises don’t matter much to his ego. But a humble person worries if they are perceived as failures or liars.

谦逊通过行动来证明。而一个吹牛的人生活在自己的幻想世界里，谎言和虚假的承诺对于他的自我而言是无关紧要的。但是一个谦虚的人会担心自己是否被他人视为卢瑟或撒谎者。

Well stated. Infact, we in the west need to step back and learn from the Chinese, rather than us expecting them the adopt our attitudes. Living in harmony, we all need more of that

Very much so.
I used to be the dean of a French university’s operations in China, and rubbed shoulders habitually with some pretty influential people.
From the way they acted, you’d never be able to tell that many of them were multimillionaires with more staff than my university had students.
They would be sitting there, at the table, smiling benignly, making polite little enquiries of other guests, sipping their tea.
My Chinese wife explained to me that it is considered foolish and extremely uncool to flash your wealth and power in front of people.

我以前是一所法国大学在中国校区的校长，见过一些相当富有影响力的中国人。

Being aggressive is the only way to get things done if you want your trivial matter to be finished within one day in Chengdu.
Call mayor hotline or swear at those goddamn civil servants when they are arrogant and call you a moron.
Most of the successful Chinese men I know are ruthless and arrogant, whether they are in China or the US.
Of course, people in the system might be”humble” in front of a foreigner like you.
Do you know that a single Chinese has different faces towards different people?
So, humility might be a form of pretence.
I might look humble for the first minute, and might utter all kinds of foul terms for the next.
Just to get things done ASAP.

It really depends on the person you are dealing with. I know one factory owner who is very successful and humble, his employees love him for it. Also have some really good friends there who are down to earth. But there are also people who are definitely not humble, who try to impress others with their social status and wealth. If you don’t know the language or culture, you might at first falsely assume it’s a much more humble culture…because it’s a high context culture where a lot of things aren’t said but everyone knows the meaning.
One piece of advice I’d give to foreigners in China, keep your eyes open and take time to learn the culture at a much deeper level before making these kinds of assumptions. There are a lot of people who go there for a 2 week vacation and come back with strong opinions thinking they know how things work there.

这要看你遇到了什么人。我认识一个工厂主，他非常成功和谦虚，他的员工都很喜欢他这一点。我也有一些中国好朋友，他们非常务实。但是也有不谦虚的人，炫耀自己的社会地位和财富。如果你不了解中国的语言和文化，你可能会错误的以为中国文化更加谦虚，因为中国文化是一种高语境的文化，很多事情没有明说，但是大家心知肚明。
